Question

How to separate a Beige color on a white background ?

Hi!

I have to do product photography for work. I am shooting beige purses then adding a white background. When I use the color range/layer/mask/fill foreground color white method it makes my beige purse turn too white thus not showcasing the true color against the white background. How do you keep the beige color of your object the same while still changing the background white ?

Select subject could work buut not always.

I would

  1. Go to channel panel
  2. Duplicate the blue channel (more contrast)
  3. Go to curves or elvels and darken
  4. Make then an easier selection of the purse by all means…

As Bojan has suggested, and example image would help, but I'll take a stab at it with this image from Yandex

As you can see, the lack of contrast would present some problems for the automatic selection tools.

So one trick that can help is to temorarily increase the contrast.  The steep Curves Adjustment layer below made the purse stand out from the background without altering the purse layer.  Select Subject gave the selection we see with one click

It has some problems, but Select & Mask got us nearer. Especially the chain which would be a nightmare to select otherwise.  Note I placed a red layer behind the purse to make problem areas stand out.

Turn off the Curves layer and the selection remains valid.  The chain is still a problem, but it was the beige on white you were asking about.

Again: Have you tried Select > Subject?

Manually correcting the Layer Mask is likely unavoidable, though.

Please post an example.

What are the Color Range settings you use?

Have you tried Select > Subject?

hi Katelynb1113!

It sounds like you are looking to use color range to select the negative space of your subject (the purse) and remove the background.

This video may help you out. Let us know if it does! Otherwise, like Bjoan mentioned, take a screenshot and post it here with exactly waht you are trying to do and we can help you out.
