Adobe’s recent update to Photoshop changed how Image > Crop displays on my screen. The old version (for the past 20 years?) automatically collapsed (resized) the project window around your new (smaller) cropped area. So if you're working on a project whose canvas was 1200 x 1200 pixels, and you cropped it to 600x600, then Adobe used to automatically shrink the window frame to 600x600.
But when cropping with the latest release of Photoshop, it maintains the same size window (1200x1200 in my example), but places a white blank space around the 600x600 image itself (as if you just deleted the area outside of the marquee selection or painted it white).
I have not changed any of my settings before or after the update. I'm using Adobe Photoshop Version 23.0.2 on Windows 10 64-bit in case it matters. CC says my version is up to date.
My problem is exactly the same as the one reported by another user (but for an older version, so maybe the same bug is back?):
Is this a known bug, or a new "feature" that I need to get used to? I hate the new window behavior when cropping.

I verified that "overscroll" is unchecked (it was) under Edit > Preferences > Tools. I also tried "classic mode" when cropping, but that had the same problem. Here is a screenshot of my crop settings, in case it matters:

I should also add that I am using View > Screen Mode > Standard Screen Mode, with "floating" independently movable document windows. If your document window is maximized to take up the whole work area, or you're in Full Screen Mode, you may not be able to see the automatic document window sizing behavior I'm describing.

And to clarify further, the marquee selection tool and image crop features are still working properly. The problem is with how Adobe renders the new window following a successful crop (the image canvas size is correct post-crop, it just has all this wasted background space around the cropped area, instead of the window frame and rulers shrinking to the exact dimensions of the cropped area like it used to do since forever).

Here are screenshots showing how the document windows behave before and after the software update:

The only way I can reproduce it is if Overscroll is checked.
Sounds like something in preferences isn't sticking.
If you restore your preferences using this manual method, then uncheck Overscroll does it work correctly?

If that doesn't solve it, you can quit Photoshop and put the Settings folder back. If that doesn't solve it, I would like a copy of your settings folder.

Jeffrey,
Thanks for your reply and suggestion. I closed Photoshop, moved that settings folder to my desktop, and re-opened Photoshop and it appears to load with default settings (with Overscroll checked). I unchecked Overscroll, closed Photoshop for good measure, and re-opened it, and the problem still persists. I can send you a copy of these new default settings (with Overscroll unchecked) or my previous personal Settings folder--just let me know how best to get it to you (email zip file, drop box, etc.)

Hang tight for now. I may want your settings later. Let me try this with a few of my colleagues when more folks are back in the office on Monday. I'm seeing inconsistent results.

OK sounds good. I appreciate your looking into this, which is really just a cosmetic annoyance, since the crop function itself still works (it just doesn't automatically resize the floating document window anymore like it used to). Have a great weekend!

@Benjamin22086466ax6k I talked with one of the engineers. She's confirming a recent fix she's been working on for this -
https://community.adobe.com/t5/photoshop-ecosystem-bugs/p-photoshop-opens-window-too-small-when-usin... will also address this behavior. I will let you know.

This just started happening to me with Photoshop 2022. It's really slowing down my workflow.

It's still broken for me (original poster). I'm on Adobe Photoshop version 23.4.1 and have also since upgraded to Windows 11 64-bit, and the broken behavior persists. 😞
