Issues with Pen Tablet drawing delay

Community Beginner ,
May 12, 2025 May 12, 2025

I've had this issue forever and spent countless hours searching for fixes on Google without being able to fix it.

https://youtu.be/uzwv5bS1F1M
Currently using Photoshop 26.6.1, but this has been happening for a while now.  I can't remember for how long.
Hardware:
Wacom Intuos 16
Intel i9-12900K 3.20GHz
32GB RAM

GeForce 4060Ti

Samsung 580 EVO 500GB SSD

I don't believe this is a hardware issue, as I have no issues in other apps or other drawing programs.  I prefer using Photoshop because it's just what I'm used to, but I am heavily considering going to a different program due to this issue.

When I press the pen down, it doesn't immediately draw with ANY brush that has Pen Pressure settings turned on.  I must leave a certain radius before it actually starts to draw, resulting in being unable to draw very small details unless I'm super zoomed in.

What I've tried:
 - Restarting Computer

 - Restarting Photoshop
 - Reinstalling tablet drivers

 - Reinstalling Photoshop

 - Restarting tablet services / drivers

 - Turning Windows Ink off

 - Adjusting available RAM for Photoshop

 - Shutting off GPU Usage for Photoshop

 - Recalibrating Tablet / Pen

 - Adjusting every smoothing setting possible everywhere I could find them

I'm sure I've tried more since this issue sprouted up, but I can't remember all of it.  Any help with this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Hi @tuls84155381! Welcome to our community!

I'm sorry to hear you're having trouble with your tablet and Photoshop. Let's see if we can get this sorted out together!

Could you let me know which pen model you're using? Also, have you added Photoshop to your Wacom Tablet Properties?

If you haven't tried it yet, resetting Photoshop's preferences might help. This will restore the app to its default state and can resolve random issues. Just make sure to back up your brushes, workspaces, and other settings first, as they will be deleted. Here's how to reset preferences.

Thanks a bunch!

Alek

I reset all my Photoshop settings and I do indeed have Photoshop added to my tablet properties.  I also deleted that and reset it.  Same issue is happening

Hi @tuls84155381!

Thanks for testing this out. Could you try forcing Photoshop to use WinTab instead of Windows Ink to see if that helps? Here's how you can do it.

Let me know how it goes!

Alek

There is definitely something wrong there.  Your system might not be current, but that hardware should easily give you a seamless drawing experience.   We can see that the image is not huge (4000px x 3000px) and 8 bit, and that the only brush setting is Pressure controls size although the cursor shape suggests it is something other than a hard round preset.

Your video seems to show you just pressing down the stylus without moving it.  Is that what you are doing?

What is the brush size in pixels, and does the brush lag wqhen drawing a brush stroke?

I thought Windows Ink was the way to go for quite some time now, but definitely try WinTab as Aleke suggested.

I wonder if the stylus could be faulty?  I have a bunch Wacom styluses that I have worn out, but mostly with the buttons, and none of them lost their pressure sensitivity.  You could try the Eraser end to test this, but that would not rule out an issue with the tablet.   You say it works fine in other apps as well, so that suggests that the hardware is OK.

Just about the best tablet setup guide I know is on the Lazy Nezumi site, so check that out.

Yes that is a custom square brush, but the issue occurs even with Photoshop default brushes.

If you look closely in the video I am indeed moving the cursor slightly.  When I press the pen down, I have to move the pen a certain distance away from the original touch point before ink actually comes out.

Brush size was about 150px I believe, but even 10px brush size does the same thing.  There is no lag after ink comes out.

And yes, I also draw with Clip Studio Paint and have 0 issues with pressure, lag or ink delay.

I'll give WinTab a shot

Please give the LNP page a read.  It is not the usual dry and boring list of instructions, but rather reads like you being given secret background information Microsoft would rather you didn't know.  Do you have LNP btw?  It used to be the best $35 you could spend on a third party plugin, but it's lept up to $60 now.  It has the best cursor control I know of with Windows systems, and Guillaume Stordeur (the author) is super helpful).   I don't think it would fix your problem though.

Actually I've seen this before, I almost bought it once for my Windows Surface tablet that was having issues.  Maybe I'll pick it up at some point, glad to see another recommendation for it!
