Question

Keyboard disconnects every time I start Photoshop

OK why does my keyboard disconnect every time I start Photoshop? It's only disconnected in Photoshop, every other program is fine. But when I return to Photoshop the keyboard is still disconnected. Except for the space bar. That works.

Eventually it comes back but things like the crop tool won't stay selected.

Ventura on a Mac Studio.

I have pinned down the process that makes this happen.

If I open Photoshop by double-clicking a psd file in Bridge then the keyboard is dead in Photoshop - until I come out of Photoshop and then go back. Simply going back to Bridge and using the arrow key once will reawaken the keyboard in Photoshop.

However. If I open Photoshop normally by clicking on the icon in my dock and then open a file from Bridge to an already running Photoshop then the keyboard issue doesn't happen.

So, it is this - with Photoshop closed, I double-click a file in Bridge which opens Photoshop. This procedure will freeze the keyboard in Photoshop until I use the keyboard elsewhere on the Mac.

This bug is repeatable on my Mac. I have done it with the keyboard activity viewer open and it is showing positive for input - however these keystrokes are not registering in Photoshop.

Work that one out, Adobe.

This is still happening. I can use my Mac all day and then as soon as I fire up Photoshop the keyboard has disconnected, all except for the space bar. Nothing else works on the keyboard. I have to minimize Photoshop, use the keyboard elsewhere on the Mac and then when I come back to Photoshop the keyboard will work again. I appear to have to use the keyboard on another app in order for Photoshop to recognize it fully. Oh and none of my other issues have gone away either - text breaking up, artefacts on screen, it's all still happening.

Hi @Jerry 1066, seems strange, for sure. I'm wondering if you are using a Magic Keyboard with Touch ID, or another keyboard with automatic pairing? Are you continually connected with a USB-C to Lightning Cable?

It's a magic keyboard connected via bluetooth... but as I mentioned, it's only happening in Photoshop. It never happens in any other program, and if I navigate away from Photoshop to, say, Premiere Pro, it's working fine. Then when I go back to Photoshop it's still cranky. One of the things it likes to do in Photoshop is not allow me to choose a new tool - it will simply keep toggling back to the previous tool when I take my finger off the keyboard. So it's clear the  message is getting through, and the keyboard is well connected. It's how Photoshop is handling the information that is suspect.

Okay, thanks for that extra info. Does this behaviour happen with all versions of Photoshop, and if so, how far back if you can remember? If you revert to a previous release or two, does the keyboard respond properly? Ever try a Preferences reset, even to rule it out?
