Is there a way to create debossing and/or beveling on all four sides of a shape?

In my attached example as well as the one you posted two sides are illuminated as it were and two are in shadow.  I want all four sides to appear the same

Then you could set the Highlight and the Shade to the same color, Blend Mode etc. or, maybe, simply use Outer Glow/Inner Glow.

I'm not sure what you mean by all four sides. It does apply it to all four sides, you just need to adjust the light direction and the highlight and shadow values. There is a button for up or down (emboss or deboss)

Please elaborate.

How does the Layer Style Bevel & Emboss fall short of your expectations?

The issue I face is that I want the effects to appear on all four sides of a shape and as far as I can determine, the effects only affect two sides (and those depend on several variables one can choose.) In other words, if for example I have a rectangular shape and I want the bevel to appear on all four sides, I cannot figure out how to do that.

Please post meaningful screenshots or sketches to actually explain what you mean.

Or do you mean you want to define four colors (»Light«, »shadow«, »east« and »west« so to speak) instead of two (»light« and »shadow«)?
