Hi Ged Traynor,

After watching all of the illustrator tutorials, my text 'type on path' tool text will just not follow the circle.

I made a circle via the Ellipse tool, but when I try to add text, It says

'You must click on a non-compound, non-masking path to create text along a path"

I also have the added problem where the 'fill' option wont work? Please advise

Do you have the Ellipse tool set to Path in the Options bar?

Then hover over the path with the Text tool selected, until you see this icon

As you can see; I get the font symbol and squiggly on cursor as over the ellipse line... this is with the text's drop down menu option of 'Type on a Path' tool, but still no luck... need text doing whats below but on the inside of the circle? So still confused

You need to adjust your Type on a Path options, and move the two controls that indicate where the text starts and ends on the path.

In this example, the text is set centered. If these settings don't bring your text far enough from your ellipse, you may need to add a second shape just for the text, or use the offset path effect to move your path out a bit.

Yes, those are the ones. You can move them with the either one of the Select tools.

How to create type on a path in Illustrator

Be sure to use an option like Baseline Shift to make the text flow inside the ellipse.

You have to think a little outside the box when it comes to Illustrator. Every little element/idea should have its own layer (if you don't want to go crazy, that is) using the Layers panel (which is very different from Photoshop's) and make judicious use of copy and pasting in place when you want to use another path's shape but keep the path itself as it is. Really quick examples:

Note the Layers panel. I quickly copied the original ellipse, pasted it in place (Edit > Paste in Place on the menu bar), selected that copy in the Layers panel and then went to town with the Type on a Path tool.

You'll need to click the more options icon (the 3 horizontal dots) for the Character panel to reveal Baseline Shift:

Logos should be made in Illustrator, not Photoshop. You want a vector graphic that can be set to any size, from a business card to a billboard with no loss of quality.
