Mask Opacity Affects Entire Image

I have searched for this, but no one seems to have my specific issue.

I have a layer mask masking out a circle. I want to "lighten" the mask so I can see the rest of the masked off portion while I'm working, but can't seem to adjust the mask opacity.

I click on the mask and adjust the opacity and fill slider: the entire image becomes less visible, rather than just the mask.

I try the above with the mask and image linked / unlinked: same results

I use the Mask Display Options to lower the density: nothing changes. Tried it linked / unlinked, doesn't seem to do anything.

Any tips are greatly appreciated!

Correct answer Theresa J

Did you try selecting the mask and then adjusting the density slider in the properties panel? This is a way to non destructively or temporarily adjust the mask.

Here are some examples:

Before applying layer mask:

With Mask enabled:

Using output slider on Mask levels:

Using opacity slider on Mask:

As you can see, the whole image is affected by what I do to the Mask. Same results linked / unlinked, and NO change when I adjust Density through Mask Options.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks again!

Yes, thanks -- I've tried this, the entire image is adjusted, rather than just the mask. I've tried it linked / unlinked

  1. You could select the Mask.
  2. Select "Levels" CMD or CTRL + L
  3. Choose slider for Output Levels.

See attached video.

Same thing could be achieved with Layers Panel > Layer Opacity or Fill slider.
I just like Levels for additional tricks

Thank you for your helpful reply. I tried your suggestion, and even with only the mask selected and either linked or unlinked, it affected the entire image, not just the mask. :/

I'll see if I can get a screenshot to show what I'm doing

Hi

Theresa gave the answer earlier. It is not the Fill /Opacity for the layer you should adjust, it is the mask Density in properties - see screenshot below:
