Memory Leak while saving size change in smart object

Hey, so recently I've been having issues with Photoshop freezing up on me. I've kept Task Manager open and typically it runs a little high (around 30% in memory) but just starting today it's shooting up to 80%-90% usage. My workflow hasn't changed with what I've been doing. I currently have about 20 action sets and have been creating more for my workflow. I have mockups that I'm implementing the photo into. I bring the photo in, use the marque tool to create my shape, click on my imported photo, convert it to a smart object, edit contents, image resize, and select my size, and that is where it starts to struggle. It takes a lot longer than it did before to convert the image to the desired size, but it still does it. Then when I go to save the smart object Photoshop slowly climbs from 15%-20% in my memory to 80% or above. As mentioned I've already created multiple action sets this way and haven't had an issue with it until today. What can I do to fix this? Does anyone have a solution?

    OK, I have seen occasional claims that memory usage actually exceeds the limit set in Preferences, which obviously shouldn't happen. I'm not discounting those, I've just never seen it myself.

     

    What is your limit set to?

     

    There is one potentially complicating factor in this, and that's systems with integrated GPUs. These GPUs don't have their own VRAM, but use shared system memory. And the GPU can eat up a lot! If that runs uncontrolled, you can easily see the whole system choking. What's not clear to me is how GPU memory usage is reported in the OS. I suspect it's under the application sub-processes.

     

    If you have a dedicated GPU, that's not it.

     

    Post the full Help > System Info. Maybe someone can spot something.

      I have a dedicated GPU, so that should not apply to me. 

      My preferences were at 70% but are now at 85%



      I did try it with the new limit and was getting the same issue. 


      I've also cleared out more space so I have more than 1.49TB available, Purged, as well as cleared out all tmp files.

      No, I can't explain this. Everything in your system info is fine.

       

      Anyone?

       

      Maybe this is a bona fide bug. As I said, I've seen some other reported cases. Not many, but a few.

       

      Any gaming settings/modifications? That can often cause problems with Photoshop.

        I typically only have 1 file open at a time, I have 1.49TB free and my average file sizes are 10-20 MB. I've done a purge through Photoshop and it went up to 94% trying to save this smart object. Is there anything I can do to fix this or resolve it? Clearing scratch disks didn't help, according to the 500GB - 1TB free I have that, especially with me only having one file open at a time and the PSD I'm working with being max 20MB. The photos I bring into the PSD range between 300-500KB.

          There's no memory leak. You're probably running out of scratch disk space.

           

          Raster image editing requires huge amounts of memory, much more than any RAM you may have installed. There is no such thing as "enough RAM". So temporary working data are written to disk, aka the scratch disk. Think of the scratch disk as Photoshop's main memory, with RAM as a fast access cache.

           

          Photoshop will saturate RAM very quickly up to the limit you set in Preferences. This is normal and as expected.

           

          Memory will be reused and recycled, it is not released when you close a file. Again, that's by design. Particularly for running batches, requesting memory from the operating system for every file would slow Photoshop down considerably.

           

          The scratch file contains all history states for all open documents, plus overhead for smart objects. The scratch file will normally be many times the size of installed RAM, and orders of magnitude bigger than nominal starting file sizes.

           

          For most normal scenarios, 200 GB free disk space for the scratch disk should be considered minimum, but if you work with very large files and many open documents you may need 500 GB - 1 TB.
