Microsoft Edge WebView2

Does anyone know why there are seven instances of Microsoft Edge WebView2 running alongside Photoshop 2022?  I hope I've solved the freezing/crashing issue but Psd is still running sluggishly and  I would still like to know about this change.

I'm looking at Task Manager on Windows 10 Pro, 64-bit (updated just a few days ago).

Thanks, Sidney

Here is a link to a discussion on this forum: https://community.adobe.com/t5/photoshop-ecosystem-discussions/microsoft-edge-webview2/td-p/12535542...

With so many people having problems with Edge Webview why won't Adobe offer a solution or provide a fix to this issue. I just don't understand.

Hi @donp30872227 why is this an Adobe issue? Did you see the post on August 11 recommending a workaround to prevent the Microsoft EDge WebView2 from locking up your software?

Mr. Stohlmeyer are you referring to this, "select "Microsoft Edge WebView2" right click "view file location" then in new window rename the exe file to tmp or anything. then restart photoshop. Microsoft Edge WebView2 is gone forever."?

I did look at that however a warning was displayed that doing so might cause problems with Windows 10. I've read other people warn of deleting or changing this file so I didn't try this. Regardless of whether this "workaround" solves the current problem by nature of the word workaround it implies the cause of the issue hasn't been corrected. I don't understand why any browser needs to be involved with using Adobe Photoshop. In my opinion it IS an Adobe issue because it prevents the software from working correctly without using some non normal procedure i.e. workaround to make the software close properly. I appreciate your suggestion but I still think more work is necessary on the part of Adobe to correct this issue. Thanks.

Does anyone know what causes multiple instances of Microsoft Edge to run while using Photoshop CC? Lately Photoshop will not close and when I check the running processes for Photoshop it has about 4 to 6 Microsoft Edge processes running. I have to manually end the Photoshop app to get it to close. I have no idea why Edge is even running. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.

I have found another thread here which spans 5 pages of people having this same issue. Why won't Adobe provide a fix for this problem? It's obviously causing problems for a lot of people including myself !! A number of workarounds have been offered but apparently they don't work. This issue needs to be resolved by Adobe. How about some help Adobe.

Hey, @donp30872227. I'll clarify this for you.
Photoshop has integrated UXP-based plugins that need WebView2 on Windows. Features like Neural Filters, Share, Export & many more require UXP. For now, this is by design.

If you encounter any issues related to performance or unexpected crashes, check the comment here: https://community.adobe.com/t5/photoshop-ecosystem-discussions/microsoft-edge-webview2/m-p/12927254#...

You can share more details about any issues you face mainly & we'll continue to help. Thanks!

I understand the reason for webview in Photoshop but it apparently causes
improper operation and crashes in Photoshop. Isn't there an alternative to
webview?

I would think Adobe would want their products to perform without problems.
Please consider correcting this issue.

Thank you.

As noted earlier in this discussion, Edge is a built-in web browser on Windows. Adobe uses it to render HTML. Its based on the Google Chrome browser. So, no, there isn't an alternative. This is what you get when you buy a Windows PC.

If you want something different, you can buy a Mac.

@Joseph33189787n6g0  Microsoft edge webview 2 is a Microsoft process called by applications, including Photoshop.  Photoshop uses it to run UXP functions and plug ins. Don't do anything - leave it and let it run.

If you choose to use MICROSOFT Windows to run your computer, then you accept the MICROSOFT components that make up Windows. But by all means, delete or disable whatever you don't understand. I'm sure the school IT folks won't mind fixing it.

If you need an IT person for that you should not be chiming in here. The mentioned solution works and just copy the path and the original name of the exe file and change it back if there is an issue. Not really hard to do and if you deal with computers you backup first just in case. Always back up before you change anything and you are good to go.

Have you gotten anywhere with this? I had to roll back Photoshop ro 25.0 because it would lock up every time I opened a multilayered PSD file! 25.0 is working normally so far. But any attempt to turn off Edgeview 2 in 25.4 screw up lots of tools, etc,

I'm having a similar experience, the program is basically unusable.  Can't believe users have been complaining about this issue for two years now and it seems to be getting even worse - and of course the program is always right, dumb users.

I must be blessed, because none of the Windows 11 computers I own and/or use with CC2024 programs have this problem. Since that's the case, I'm not sure that Webveiw2 is the ultimate culprit here. I would suggest looking for other commonalities in conjunction with this issue. Same/similar hardware, other software that could be interacting, plugins, etc.

The strangest thing in my case is that when PS is running and there is a file open in it (.psd, jpg, etc), my GPU behaves normally. If I'm doing something to the image, the GPU responds normally, and if I'm not doing anyghing on the file, the GPU stays at 0% usage. But as soon as I close all files and keep PS open, the GPU jumps to a permanent 30-ish% usage by the Edge Webview 2 process... 30% usage of GPU to do absolutely nothing... So, I have to always keep a file open in PS to keep my GPU at 0% (or to behave normally)...

Forget trying to make these bugged out programs behave by their means. Fight fire with fire by bugging the system out.

Track down ms edge webview exe in programs and rename the application, cut it off from being able to initialise at all.

Doesn't matter what it's renamed to. Adding OLD_ as a prefix will do. Helps to track system changes too. Scooby dooby doo.

Done & dusted ready to be forgotten. Unless edge gets updated which will reset the changes. Ensure edge never gets updated. Ok bye.
