Multiplies the inverse of the blend and base colors?????

In simple terms (ignoring gamma and colour mode) :

Start with your pixel values on each layer ranging from 0 to 1 (so using decimal fractions rather than integers from 0-255)
Invert them so they now run from 1 to 0
Multiply the numbers on the two layers together 

Invert them again to give resulting blended value
