The object selection tool creates a colored rectangle over the selection instead of a subject selection no matter how I adjust the options. At times it selects odd pieces of the image from the background. In other words it does not work. Please help…

This could be an issue with the GPU drivers. Try these steps:

  • Go to Preferences > Technology Previews > Enable 'Deactivate Native Canvas'
  • Go to Preferences > Performance > Enable 'Use Graphics Processor
  • Restart Photoshop & try again.

As a test, you may try to roll back your AMD GPU's drivers to a version from a few months back. Let me know how it goes. Once you roll back, try this:

Reset Photoshop's preferences again & on Windows, the GPU info & Logs location is %APPDATA%\Adobe\CameraRaw. A

Thanks for sharing the details. I'll help you figure this out.

Please share screenshots of the outcome when you use the Object selection tool.

Try these suggestions:

  • Disable the Object finder as a test & use a different image with contrasting objects as a test.
  • Use the Cloud-based selections.

Go to the location of the preference folder mentioned below and rename it to backup.

https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/preferences.html

  • Windows 10/11: Users/[user name]/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop [version]/Adobe Photoshop [version] Settings
  • Press Windows + R & type this is the Run Window - %APPDATA%\Adobe

    SameerK_1-1670422388362.png

  • Rename the Adobe Photoshop folder by adding a .old at the end. (Adobe Photoshop 2023 > Rename > Adobe Photoshop 2023. old)

This will give a fresh start to Photoshop as a fresh install. Let me know how it goes.

Thanks!

Hi Sameer,

Tried everything you suggested before renaming but no luck. Finally renamed Photoshop to Adobe Photoshop 2023.old but still get same result – am including screenshot after I renamed and restarted Photoshop. Same darn rectangle.

Thanks,

Daina

  • Rename the GPU & Logs folder in this directory by adding .old at the end. (GPU.old & Logs.old)
  • Restart Photoshop, and it should capture the updated driver & hardware capabilities.

Let me know how it goes. Thanks!

Hi Sameer!

Thank you - I selected "Enable 'Deactivate Native Canvas'"  - I already had Graphics Processor enabled. And instead of going back to old drivers for AMD I updated them 🙂 Hooray it worked!! All is well. Thank you much for your help!

Best,

Daina
