On Laptop, Tool wont switch unless you mouse click on tool palette

On my laptop,  after opening new image, Tool wont switch unless you mouse click on tool palette.

In other words, if last tool used was patch and you use keyboard shortcut to go to any other tool if wont change. Only if you mouse click into the tool palette, very weird and very frustrating.

Hi @larry45 sorry to hear this. When did this first start happening? What updates or changes have you done recently to the OS or software?

Does it work correctly? 

If that doesn't solve it, you can quit Photoshop and put the Settings folder back. 

It may help if we could see your Photoshop System Info. Launch Photoshop, and select Help >System Info...and copy/paste the text in a reply.

CORY,  I'M generally not a fan of deleting preference more as it destroys other things, and often does not fix the issue.

So first from system info can you come up with more targeted soluciton?  VERY weird bug never seen it before, heard of this ever?  Known issue?

Restore preference, what does that destory? keyboard shortcuts?  I have no idea.

Larry, when you use the manual method as linked to by Cory, the first step is to rename your preferences file to preserve it, then a new preferences file is created. You can restore the original if it doesn't work. Details are in his link, so at least read the entire help page.

My advice is to follow the link from Adobe Employee @CoryShubert and make sure your computer meets or exceeds system requirements, including RAM as Cory mentioned.

Yes does meet it, says 8 ram minimum, and laptop has 8, and PS is working fine except for the issue I posted about.

Hi @larry45, in the Mac hybred laptops, while it may have 8gb of RAM, it is not all available to Ps as it is being used by other apps as well as the OS.  If the image or function you are trying to do taps out of available RAM for Ps, issues can happen.

Cory, but on laptop, don't use others apps. maybe mail and internet. Just a backup computer, and rest of PS works fine. Just the tool, needs to be tapped by mouse to start. But you 99% sure Ram issue?

Would you bother? I could just get used to tapping 1st with mouse... Lot of troubleshooting....

@larry45 , we are not able to say 99% without physical device running various tests... I'm sure you understand.  The best we can do is listen to the issue and based on past issues/bugs/customer messages offer up what the known possibilities could be.

Would you care to share a video of your issue, launching Ps and showing in detail the steps you are doing? The team could see based on this and your sysinfo if there is something we are missing in our back and forth... happy to do do this.

Thanks Cory, don't think video help for this one right?  Just see PS, but then I'm clicking keyboard shortcurs to change the tool and not working (unless, workaround, click tool with mouse first any tool). wont see any of that with video right?

Another thing to try @larry45 is changing the springboard keyboard shortcuts time. By default it is set to 200ms which is what it has been for years so if that doesn't work for your workflow, increase the timing or uncheck that option so that spring-loaded keyboard shortcuts are disabled if that fits your workflow.
