P: Graphics card not detected in Photoshop 22.3.1 on Windows 10

I update Photoshop CC2021 to vers 22.3.1 on 4-14-2021. Now photoshop does not recognizes the graphic accelerator.

I have a Nvidia Gforce GTX 1050Ti Graphic card never had any problems before when updating. I had to revert back to vers. 22.3 to make it work again.

I would just like to say that following some Windows updates and Photoshop updates I am finally back to a fully regonised GPU and my multi apps are back to working at the speeds I previously had.

My problems stared in Match 2021 and fully resolved in July 2021. So after 4 months of frustration created by Microsoft Windows and Adbobe Photoshop updates , the latest versions from both companies solved my problenms

I have the same problem since 22.3.1 and needed to revert back 22.3.

System = Windows 10, 2004. GPU = AMD Radeon R7 200 Series (1GB).

Why can't simple traditional tasks like brush preview or Adpative Wide Angle filter not still work with that hardware ?

The graphics routines at the heart of Photoshop are being rewritten to use modern GPU functionality (Metal on Apple and Direct X on Windows). This is to give the speed required with the larger images we use today.

This requires a GPU with at least 2GB of VRAM and support for Direct X 12. Your AMD R7 200 has neither of those.

Just wanted to add: If you upgrade your GPU, be aware you might have issues finding even a decent-performing card because of shortages. Plan accordingly.

I updated to Windows H21H1 ( with PS at v 22.4) and when I open photshop on my Dell XPS 15 Laptop and it now recognises my GTX1050 and works fine. if I then use Windows +P to use my Monitor with Photoshop open it still works fine.

However If I open photshop from my external Monitor only then it does not find my GPU. Very Strange.

At least I am back t my photograpghy without those no GPU restrictions

I have been struggling with Photoshop detecting mu Nvidia GE1050 GPU since Mid March 2021 . When I recently downloaded CC22,4 it did find my GPU, then Windows updates arrived on 11 May and I was able to still get CC to see my GPU. for a day. On next reboot it was gone again. Today CCV22.4.1 sees my Graphics Card but the tick box and advanced options box to use for CC2021 to use the card are greyed out. Nvidia Driver have been updated again . Now in CCV22.4.1 when I click on the driver name in Preferences > Perfomance a message beloe is says there is an error with my GPU? Any ideas? My GPU is in a Dell XPS laptop. Device manager says my GPU is working.

can you send over your System Info from inside Photoshop? It's under the Help menu.

Sometimes Windows updates muck around with opencl drivers and driver installations from your GPU manufacturer should correct that. Always restart your system after installing something new to validate the test.

You are using an 8 year old GPU. Have you read the thread and did you try the PSUserConfig.txt to force your GPU, if it is not being picked up in 22.4 as meeting the specs?

The GTX570 is an 11 year old GPU that does not meet the minimum system requirements for the current version of Photoshop.

For the reasons Mark explained above, those minimum system requirements have changed as the graphics routines are rewritten.

That said, you may wish to try the following , whilst you look toward updating your GPU.

Try creating a text file named PSUserConfig.txt and containing the lines:
# Force GPU On
GPUForce 1
Save that text file to :
Windows: [InstallationDrive]:\Users \ [UserName]\ AppData\ Roaming\ Adobe\ [Photoshop_version]\[Photoshop_version]Settings\
macOS: //Users/[UserName]/Library/Preferences/[Photoshop_version]Settings/
This will force Photoshop to use your GPU but please note though that this is requires v22.4 and is not officially supported by Adobe, so may cause other issues such as instability or crashes when Photoshop tries to use your older GPU to carry out functions designed for a newer GPU - so you do it at your own risk.

Like as I said before, it doesn't matter how old the vga is. Version 22.4 fully supports it.

If you are able to invest in new hardware, congrats to you. I have no way, it is already chaos enough with this pandemic around the world affecting all sectors of the economy, mainly in my country.

Any justification of functions with an absurd need for new tec features from a version 22.2 to a version 22.3 or 22.4, does not make any sense. You can continue to argue as much as you can about the age of vga card, etc ... it was medium/highend in your time and was 100% a few days ago.

I installed version 22.4 and encountered the same problem. Program crashed and wouldn't open. Then I received a notice of inability to open the program with a statement that there was no explanation as to how to fix. Doesn't seem that the new version fixed the problem, at least not for me

@bdewittsd, this is a long thread, and we've seen some people report disabled GPUs (which seems to have been addressed), and others reporting crashes. I'd like to take the crashing issue as a separate issue, since we don't know how that could be related to the GPU at this point.

Thanks Mark. I actually didn't know to reboot (although I should since it is the universal "fixer"). I tried that and it looks like that might have solved the problem. I'll report back if I have issues.

So I can get it to work, but only if I don't exit out of the program. Once I quit and try to reopen it's back to the fail. Then if I do a complete restart it will work again until I close it, which is kind of a pain because I have to exit out of everything I have open and wait for the restart. I did upgrade to the 22.4.1 version.

Version 22.4 was released yesterday, and it included a patch that has proven to fix some of the GPU detection issues that are reported here.

Unfortunately, there is nothing that can make older cards (> 8 years old) work with these later versions of Photoshop, and we are having to disable GPUs due to their instability in current operating systems, or due to their slow operation. Most apps don't utilize the GPU the way Photoshop does, so it wouldn't surprise me to hear that for some customers, no other apps seem to have problems with old cards.

22.4 seems to have resolved my problem also. I've been using it for two
days now and check my performance regularly and it is still recognizing my
graphics card. Honestly, I was somewhat reluctant after having to revert
down from 22.3.1.. So far so good, thanks Adobe for resolving this issue.
