Paths not transferring across

Hi all.

When I drag across a layer that has a saved path into another image, the path disappears. I'm new to paths so am probably doing a very rookie mistake, but can anyone please help?

There never was a path associated with you layer you created a selection from a path and delete pixel in your pixels layer.  You layer is a raster pixel layer with transparent and empty pixels.   When you drag it to an other document you may be able to load the layers transparency as a selection and convert the selection to a path.  However, that path may not be exactly like your original Path.  There was two conversions done to selection and to path.

Do you mean a drag a Layer with a vector layer mask into an other document?  If so the layer content and vector layer mask should be copied into the document you dropped it on.  If it was in the layer palette as a shape layer the path will only show in the path palette when the shape layer is the current Photoshop target in the documents.   If the path failed to copy the layer may not even  have the proper shape.

Thanks for coming back to me JJ. I'll have to do a screenshot of the photos to explain what I've done. I've only just started doing paths so my knowledge isn't that great. I used the pen tool to trace an outline of a shape, then saved the path. I then made a selection using the path, deleted the background and then saved the image. When I tried to drag that layer onto another image, the path was no longer there.

It takes time to learn Photoshop I have been using it for more than twenty years maybe some day I will know how to use all of Photoshop features.  However I do not need to use all of Photoshop features. So that day will not be in my lifetime.
