Photoshop 2020 Save As PNG format deletes all metadata

Explorer ,
Nov 08, 2019 Nov 08, 2019

My Photoshop workflow is: Add metdata as a sidecar file to the NEF raw file (usung ACDSee); open NEF file in Photoshop camera raw; do some edits; open image; save as PSD; do whatever to the image in Photoshop; Save As .png format for Web use. In Photoshop 2019 this retained all metadata and saved it in the .png file. In Photoshop 2020 this deletes all metadata - EXIF, IPTC, GPS data, camera data, everything except the Photoshop-specific tags. Doing the same but saving as JPEG retains all of the the metadata.

When I installed the 2020 update I retained the Photoshop preferences, but removed the 2019 version.

In Photoshop 2020 all of the metadata is visible in File -> File Info, and is saved in the .psd files (i.e. visible to external programs like ACDSee). I can also export the XMP file from File Info and all the data is there. It's just saving as .png that loses the metadata. Export (both Quick Export and Export As) as .png also loses the data.

This makes Photoshop 2020 useless for me, since I don't want to save as JPEG. I have re-installed Photoshop 2019, and it works as it should.

What is going on here??? Is there some setting I need to change in Photoshop 2020 to get it to save metadata in .png files? Or is this another bug?

David

¡Hola Sandra!

Hi David and everyone else! I got in touch with our team here and it looks like they're aware of this issue. They've confirmed that this will be fixed with a Photoshop update in the near future. Unfortunately, they don't have a timeline. Apologies for the inconvenience!

When saving the png are you using Save As, Export As or Save for Web?

What operating are you using?

I have tried Save As or Quick Export or Export As, but not Save for Web. System is Windows 10, all updates applied.

Use Save for Web. FWIW, I have an open bug with Adobe about Photoshop and Bridge not reading PNG metadata correctly. Not sure what the status of it is yet.

Save for Web is deprecated in Photoshop 2020 (i.e. marked as "Legacy" under the Export menu). Anyway, Save for Web was notorious for stripping metadata. And Save As should work as it did in Photoshop 2019.

I'm seeing the same thing here running photoshop cc 2020 on macOS Catalina 10.5.1

(photoshop cc 2019 does save the metadata when using Save As>png)

The only png save option that fully retains the metadata seems to be saving the png from inside camera raw.

I have received one response from Adobe Doesn't Care, asking irrelevant questions about my Photoshop Express account (I have Adobe CC, not PSE). I have received no other responses, even after several emails asking for a progress report. I don't know if they are getting my emails and ignoring them or not getting them at all. If anyone from Adobe sees this, please respond!

I am experiencing the same problem with my Olympus raw files that I edit and save as png using Photoshop 2020.  The metadata is not lost when saving as jpg with Photoshop 2020 and is not lost when saving as png using Photoshop 2019.  This is a huge frustration that I wish Photoshop would address.

Hi David,
I mentioned "this will be fixed with a Photoshop update in the near future", didn't confirm it'd be done in the next available update. We don't have a timeline, I'm afraid. Apologies for the confusion.

Hello,

This should be something you all are fixing now, not 'sometime in the future'.   Saving to a PNG is a pretty big deal...don't you think?  Get this done guys!

This is an issue in Illustrator as well! Looks like they broke it in CC2018 or so. Can we get this fixed as well? I posted under the Illustrator forum too.

I am running Photoshop 2021 22.5.1 and this is still a problem.  In Photoshop 2021 all of the metadata is visible in File -> File Info, and is saved in the .psd files (i.e. visible in File Info or Properties of file). Exporting or as as .png or .jpg loses the metadata. My export preferences are set to save Copyright info.

What is going on here??? Is this bug back or is there something else I need to do now?

Are you using File > Export > Export As... or File > Export > Save for Web...?

Export As doesn't preserve all metadata. Use Save for Web and set Metadata to "All"

LATEST

File > Save As .png or .jpg saves metadatas (Save copy does as well as well). The Export commands don't. Save for Web should never be used!
