Photoshop 2022 Freezes Unexpectedly on Windows 10

The program randomly hangs and does not respond to keystrokes or mouse clicks. No other program on my Windows 10 computer with 32 GB Ram has this problem including Bridge and Camera Raw. The freeze can happen anytime; it does not matter what operation I perform or whether I am using a smart object, adjustment layer or saving. The program randomly freezes. I use Windows Task Manager to end the task. I followed all the advice I could find about checking my graphics card compatibility, allocating more memory, starting the program without the filters loaded, etc, etc and none of those solutions solved the problem.

I may have found something that will helps. Go to Preferences > File Handling. I had the Automatically Save Recovery Information checked and I had it set to save every 10 minutes. I changed the setting to every 1 hour, and the problem did not re-occurred. Usually, for my work, I manually save my file after having done a lot of work, and that usually happens in less than one hour. I then went back and unchecked the Automatically Save Recovery checkbox. After doing that, I exited the program, and then restarted the program. The freeze has not reoccurred. If this change does stop the problem, it probably means that there is a bug in the code that does the automatic backup.

Hello there, just bought the Photoshop 2022 a few days ago.  On windows 10, the program freezes constantly whatever I do.  I do have to shut down Photoshop with the task manager.  As I read every thing here about this, is there any solutions to date?

Photoshop is becoming more unusable with every coming year...

I am the original poster of this thread. Photoshop continues to freeze unexpectedly. Here is some more information for your software developers to look into. Firstly, immediately after a freeze, I sometimes find a 0-byte file with a name like psNNNN.tmp in the same folder where I am working. Secondly, once PS freezes, it seems to do so again and again, and often while performing the exact same operation, such as file save, crop or select. (Those are typical, but the freeze can happen while I am doing anything.) The only way I can prevent the freezing is to shut down the computer (not restart, but full shut down), and hope that PS won't freeze up. As I have stated before, I used to do programming. The more I think about what is happening involves a problem with semaphores. Of course I have no way of knowing, but it seems like a "deadly embrace" or some process is holding onto the semaphore and so PS hangs. Since this does not happen with any other program I use, it is most likely a PS issue. When the freeze occurs, the only way to do anything is to use Task Manager to end the program. Absolutely nothing will re-enable the program to run. If you switch to another program (a mail program for example) and then click on a PS window or use Windows Alt - Tab to switch active windows, you can not make PS an active window again. Possibly PS is using 16-bit handles for semaphores and Windows needs 32-bit handles, or vice-versa. I hope this helps. @DanielPresedo (I assume the @ symbol notifies the specific user.) Ken

I am having a similar problem.  Occurs consistently when I try to resize an image.  Photoshop locks up and then a few minutes later I get "Device Power State Failure" Blue Screen and Windows reboots.

I think that I have finally discovered why the program freezes. I have been testing the software for more than 2 days now, and have not had a single freeze. The problem is caused by a setting in Norton's protection software. They have a scheme to prevent bad actors from assuming a program uses the same memory location and they attempt to randomize where dll software is loaded. Apparently, this scheme and Photoshop are not compatible. I disabled Norton's protection for this feature and have not had a problem since then. I expect that doing so is low risk.

Attached are two files. One shows the settings and the other shows Norton's descriptions of these settings.

I am having the same issues and they started around January 1st also. I have using the same setup for years, PC, Bridge and Photoshop. Something changed had to change in the software for so many having the same issue.

Hi, FYI, there's a new 23.1 update with several performance enahncement and issues fixed, you might want to give it a try.

@Ken Curtis were you able to test the suggestion to disable the native canvas in preferences/Technology Preview? This is know to cure many issues.

Also, could you check in prefs/performance if GPU acceleration is on when there is a freeze, or if it becomes disabled?

Is there any other software running? did you try to run only Ps to see if there is a conflict?

The native canvas is and has been disabled in the Preferences > Technology Preview. There is no way to see about the GPU acceleration is on when PS freezes because PS does not respond to any mouse clicks or keystrokes; therefore, I can not check. Regarding any other software running, usually it is just Bridge and Thunderbird, my email client. Occasionally, there are other programs running, such as Chrome browser, but it sits idle while I work on photos. I have not correlated the freeze to anything yet. I tried to look for a Windows message queue to see if the keystrokes are going to the window, but I do not have the tools for this. I have not had a freeze up for the last 2 days. When the freeze does occur, I will look at my Norton Antivirus activity to see if there is any relevant item.

I just edited an image and was experimenting with some new brushes that I imported a few minutes before. After trying the brushes, I decided I did not want them, so I clicked on be Brushes panel's menu and chose Delete. Photoshop froze the instant I clicked on Delete. This has nothing to do with the brushes I used. I am letting you know because this is just another example of Photoshop freezing randomly and unexpectedly.

I thought the problem was solved after updating Photoshop to version 23.0.2, but after a couple days, the freeze ups showed up again.

I certainly wish some programmer would look at this issue. Very annoying.

As I mentioned earlier the way Camera Raw is initialized is important. They are not the same thing.

"I only mentioned Camera Raw because it does not fail normally when used with Bridge, so you would imagine the code is OK. But when it runs as a filter, just like other filters, PS can lock up."

If using Camera Raw as a filter thru Photoshop is the only place showing the problem then we shoud focus on steps so we may reproduce it here.
