Photoshop crashes and freezes

Whatever I try, which ever update I try, the latest PS will only start up with a beach ball and that ever since version 22.x

On a MBA 2020 Big Sur 11.4 I7 16GB

What I tried:

- deleted preferences

- uninstalled and reinstalled

- reverted to version 21.X well that worked but updating results in the same crash.

What to do next?

I have students who are running into the same problems.

Does anyone know where I can find this script to run on a Windows PC?

Here is the solution that worked for me. Scroll down to "use a script to restore permissions" on this page:

https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/kb/lightroom-basic-troubleshooting-fix-most-issues.html

There is a link to a file called LightroomCorrectPermission.zip. (Even though it refers to Lightroom, it solves permission problems for Photoshop, too.) Follow the directions by running the unzipped file in Terminal in Mac OS. After I did this, I was able to run the current version of Photoshop without it crashing.

Thank you! This worked indeed.

Applied the file as described, updated PS to the latest, version and restarted.

I have the same problem. I'm running Big Sur 11.4, and I just updated Photoshop to the latest version. As soon as I launch it, it freezes and I have to force quit it. The prior version of Photoshop worked fine and the latest version of Lightroom Classic works fine. I've uninstalled and reinstalled Photoshop, but the problem persists. How do I install the previous version of Photoshop?

Fairly good explanation of how to downgrade here:  https://helpx.adobe.com/download-install/using/install-previous-version.html

And I'll add that I had luck resolving this simply by downgrading to Version 22.2.0.  Had been suffering the same issues as above.

Hi,

We're sorry about Photoshop 2021 crashing on launch on your Macbook. Would you mind telling us if it is an Intel based MacBook that you're using or one with the M1 processor?

Please check if Photoshop 2021 has the necessary permissions by following the steps mentioned below:

1. Go to the System Preferences for your Mac, then Security and Privacy, then select the Privacy tab.

2. Then select Accessibility from the list to the left & check if Photoshop is added to the list with a check mark in front of it.

3. If Photoshop is not a part of the list, please add it by unlocking the window first using the lock at the bottom left, then clicking the + icon & navigating to the Applications folder.

4. Also, grant permissions to Photoshop under Full disk access located in the same list as Accessibility.

5. Once done, restart the Mac & check if it helps.

Let us know how it goes!

Regards,

Nikunj

Thank you for responding.

Checked everything you wrote, accesibility wasn't checked, Did that and checked Full disk access, was ok. So saved this and restarted. Alas no tep further yet, can't even acces the preferences pane, the beachball beats me every time.

Did a forced stop and send the report, but here it is anyway...attached in pdf.

Just a heads up that as of today, v 22.4 still exhibits the same issue (macOS 10.15.17 on a 2017 5k iMac with Radeon Pro 575 GPU)

I've been using P'shop 22.3.1 for some weeks with no problems. Today, it crashes when I try to start it. I've gone through several fixes offered by Adobe's support pages with no joy. Creative Cloud says it's up to date. Any suggestions?

2. I did uninstall Photoshop, twice; the second time, I chose not to save anything. I reinstalled from the Creative Cloud window. CC thinks the app is ready to go. But when I try to start it (either from CC or by double-clicking the Photoshop icon in my Applications folder), the icon flashed once, but nothing happens. Anyone else having trouble with this version?

Hi Keith,

Did you use the Adobe CC Cleaner when reinstalling?

Photoshop crashes right after (less thatn a second) the open command.

Started after the last OSX security update. Tried to reinstall the PS already with cleaning all the prefs with the App Cleaner.

I am having this exact same issue. Also for some reason this issue is causing me to have problems with other programs. I will be using Autodesk 3DS Studio Max for my next class and I've noticed that ever since the issues started with photoshop my 3ds max program started crashing as well. I do not know if the two are related, but they started at the exact same time.

Solved. The solution was restart. I didn't try that earlier because it happend right after an earlier restart, that was part of some OSX security update.

This is seriously driving me up the wall!! I've lost so much work with this issue and so much time in trying to fix it (searching these forums and seraching web for answers). Adobe Help is pretty much non-existent, which is very poor for a supposedly leading light in the industry. Is there no way to chat to any assistants or advisors?

I have the lastest updates for Photoshop and my iMac (27" 5K which is only about 3 years old). I wish I'd stayed with Catlina and my Photoshop 2019, which I can't even revert to now 'cos I can't find it in Creative Cloud.

I've been using Photoshop for over 20 years, but, as an artist, I'm seriously thinking of moving on to pro-create or some such. Dreadful experience!

I'd appreciate any help, though by the looks of things, no-one has solved this problem.

Thanks,

Jim

Hi

I assume you're on MAC Big Sur, a lot of people appear to be having issues with Photoshop on Big Sur, can't really help you out as I'm not a MAC user, you could revert the OS to Catalina and install CC 2019 from here CC 2019 has not been tested on Big Sur

Considering you're an artist have you checked out Krita it's completely free

Thank you so much for the reply and the links!

Yes, Im using Big Sur. I think I may have fixed the problem of it crashing, but I'll wait and see. I updated my Wacom tablet and it's not crashed since, so fingers crossed. But now the Move Tool in PS is acting up!! Lol.

Krita looks really good. I think I'll be downloading it and having ago.

Again, thank you for taking the time. Much appreciated 🙂

Hi, I really need some help!

I have a brand new Macbook Pro - well, I bought it mid year.

I have Photoshop 21 and all Apple updates are current.

Everytime I used a brush, the computer revs up and I get the coloured circle - and it freezes. It has now started doing it with the Spot healing brush too! What am i doing wrong, or is this a problem with photoshop and Apple?  I can't get a damn thing finished!

Thanks

Hi,

We're sorry about the trouble with Photoshop 2021. Please go to the System Preferences for your Mac, then Security and Privacy, then select the Privacy tab. Then select Accessibility from the list to the left and check if you see Photoshop added to the list with a check mark in front of it. If Photoshop is not a part of the list, please add it by unlocking the window first using the lock at the bottom left, then clicking the + icon and navigating to the Applications folder. Also, grant permissions to Photoshop under Full disk access located in the same list as Accessibility. Once done, restart the Mac and check if it helps.

Once you have added Photoshop to the list, you can also try to optimize the preferences of Photoshop using the steps suggested here: Optimize Photoshop performance

Let us know if it helps!

un-install 2021 and install 2020 from Creative Cloud using the pull down menu (3dots). 2021 is buggy. The 2020 interface is different from the version I was using, but at least Pshop is now working!!

Hi sjamgraphics,

Sorry for the crashes you're seeing with Photoshop 22.0. Can you post the crash details here? Have you sent the crash logs using the Crash Reporter?

If, in the meantime, you need to install the previous of Photoshop until you get 22.0 up and running, see Install previous versions of your Creative Cloud apps.

Let us know how it goes.

Regards,

Pete
