Photoshop freezing when selecting Convert to Layers (or applying the Camera Raw filter)
Hello!
I've been dealing with some freezing issues in Photoshop over the past few days and trying different approaches in order to pinpoint the problem. Now the initial issue was that Photoshop took too long or froze when using the object selection tool. Since I'm doing a Photoshop course, I'm using many different options and the same thing happened when I used the option "Convert to Layers" on a smart object. And it also froze when I applied the modifications of the Camera Raw filter (so when I press OK after using this filter, the waiting icon would appear and freeze after one second).
I've tried changing the "Faster" to "More stable" setting in the Image Processing menu, and also turning off the OpenCL or the Use Graphics Processor option entirely in the Performance menu. I've even actually reverted to some earlier Photoshop versions (2022, 2021), but the freeze kept happening. I also deleted my temporary folder (%temp% in the Run menu). But these things (even with the most stable setting) don't prevent the freezes.
In the end, sometimes it's working all right (just slow when I use the quick selection tool, but I guess it's understandable because it requires a lot of power), and sometimes it freezes. For example, if the first thing I do is open the PSD file with the smart object and choose "Convert to Layers", the freeze rate is 100%. If I do something else, and then open that file, it converts the smart object to layers instantly and work all right with other problematic options (Camera raw filter). I normally open the files in Bridge, but I've tried now opening the file directly in Photoshop itself and boom, freeze. I've tried the Camera Raw filter and when I click OK it freezes while showing the Progress bar. So that's the thing: if I do some other stuff, or maybe open other files, then it might work. And once it works, then I'm completely fine that session, everything goes smoothly. But if I go straight to this option (because I want to check if I've fixed the problem), boom. If my computer has the capacity to execute this options, how come I'm encountering this freezes in this particular contexts? To be clear, Photoshop freezes, but doesn't crash.
I'd love to know if there's a possible explanation for this. Any ideas? I'm using Windows 10 Enterprise (version 22H2)
