Photoshop is extremely laggy on high-end system

Trust me when I say I've tried EVERYTHING.

This includes:

  • clean installing Windows 11
  • installing the latest studio drivers
  • installing older/factory drivers
  • using Creative Cloud Removal Tool and reinstalling Photoshop
  • increasing the Performance settings to max (RAM usage, cache levels etc)
  • laptop's cooling is perfect - vapor chamber heatsink, new thermal paste, doesn't get hot or throttle
  • Windows performance mode
  • turning off hardware acceleration (not a real fix)

For reference: Intel i9-13900H, 64GB RAM, 1TB SSD (7000mb/s, brand new), Nvidia 3500 Ada 12GB

All of these only for Photoshop to run like a turtle. This is system wide - brush is laggy (it's not the smoothing setting), selections are laggy, creating shapes is laggy, scrolling/zooming is laggy etc.

I have a PC with almost the same specs and same settings, and Photoshop runs fine. No issues there.

First of all, since this is a laptop, it probably has dual graphics. That's always a potential conflict. Disable the integrated GPU as per section 6 & 7 here: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/troubleshoot-gpu-graphics-card.html

Generally, laptops tend to be filled up with all kinds of useless software. This is where the laptop vendors see a chance to put their own stamp on the product. Most of it is just in the way, and causes problems. Uninstall, or disable as much as possible from startup. Also, go on a hunt for everything that looks gaming-related, and disable/reset.

In short, clean up.

When you install the studio driver, check "clean install" to remove all traces of the old driver. Uncheck the extra components in the driver package (GeForce Experience and PhysX). You don't need them.

Finally - never max out Photoshop's memory allocation in Preferences! That's choking the rest of the system. Even ACR runs outside Photoshop's address space, and needs its own memory separate from Photoshop. Don't go above 75% or so. Also leave cache levels at default (4).

What I'm about to say might sound like a lie but I've already done those.

As I mentioned, I'm running on a clean install of Windows 11. Actually this is my fifth time doing it just because of Photoshop alone. No aditional apps are installed besides CC and Photoshop of course.

Yes, I have two GPUs and I've already tried manually forcing Photoshop to use Nvidia. -No change.

By maxing out the performance settings I wasn't clear enough - of course I didn't put the RAM usage to 100% but everything else is maxed out, like it is on my PC. RAM right now is about 90%, BUT... even with the default Settings there's still no change

(just to confirm, I just tried doing those again, with no results)

Funny thing is - when I got the laptop Photoshop used to run fine, even after the first clean reinstall. Then one day is just suddenly became laggy

By @lucellent

I'd still recommend a thorough cleanup. That does sound to me like some of that vendor-installed software updated and started to interfere.

If you're uncomfortable with uninstalling, you can at least disable it from startup. That's easily reversible.

I've seen laptops where you can hardly even find the operating system, it's all hidden under all kinds of "helpful" layers. Granted, that's worst case, but there's usually something.

I'm 100% confident there's no manufacture bloatware, as I always format the disk before installing Windows on it

but appreciate the suggestions

Hi

Can you go to Photoshop's Help menu > System info and click on copy. Then paste the info here.

Can you also confirm that this is with the laptop plugged in to an extenal power source.

Finally try this test.
Create a new document 30,000 x 30,000 pixels , 8 bits/channel and white background. Set the zoom so you can see the entire document (here that is 4% zoom)

Go to the info panel and in panel options turn on timing.

Select the brush tool and set a soft round brush to 5000 pixel size,  hardness 0%, black (opacity and flow both 100% Smoothing 0%)

Click at the top left of the canvas and then shift click at the bottom right.

When the brush has finished drawing a soft diagonal line, read the timing in the info panel and post it here. It will give an indication of brush lag. My system takes 7.7s in 8 bits/channel

4.7 seconds does not sound slow at all in that test  - assuming it was a 5000px brush with 0% hardness used on the same background layer.

Can you confirm your setting in Nvidia control Panel - Manage 3D settings - Programs - Adobe Photoshop - Select Preferred graphics processor for this program.

Can confirm

I'm open to screen recording the issue somehow but that might interfere even more with the performance

I don't doubt you are having issues - I was just trying to assess the basic brush performance which, on that test, is very good.

Does running task manager highlight any issues when you see the lags? As an example are you seeing any high synchronisation activity?

Only thing I notice is doing the basic tasks like using the brush, selecting etc. pump the CPU to 100%, meanwhile both graphic cards remain idle

You can see in the system info that the Iris Xe appears in several places. It shouldn't do that; it should list the RTX throughout. In other words, there's a conflict.

Did you disable ithe Iris Xe completely (as per the link I posted), or just set it as preferred in the driver?

The problem with dual graphics in Photoshop is that the GPU is used in actual data processing. It goes back and forth; it's not just a passive one way downstream flow as it is in simpler applications. You can't send data to one GPU and get it back from the other.

Photoshop may not require an extremely powerful GPU, but it does call on some very advanced functions that need to work.

Admittedly only set it preferred but now I followed the full guide, including setting sniffer to use Nvidia

unfortunately barely any change, maybe slight but comparing it with my PC which is smooth as butter, the laptop is stil laggy

I stopped updating at v25.3.1 for much the same reasons.

High end desktop, no change to my system, 25.3.1 works perfectly with multiple high res TIF files open.  After that it went all laggy.  None of the changes suggested here or in my post about it worked.

It's terrible, create an empty workbench, and move it.

moves fluid.

add a text "a" for example

and move the work table.

it becomes very slow.

If you go down to version 25.7 and try that mass, it moves super fluid

I have tried to explain this to the support area and it is impossible.

They don't give a solution.

I went out of my way to sign into this forum and thank you on my bare knees, holy sh*t what a life saver you are. Exactly this has been the bane of my existence trying to design UI panels and you've just solved it, thanks again!!

I'm in them same boat but with a desktop:
Ryzen 9 7950X

192GB of memory

4090 GPU, 10gbit Ethernet

Absolutely nothing else lags on this machine.  Nothing.  But photoshop is slower than molasses in January.  It wasn't like that until relatively recently.
