Print problems after update to Mac OS Big Sur 11.6.2

Explorer ,
Dec 16, 2021 Dec 16, 2021

After the latest update from Mac OS Big Sur to version 11.6.2, I encounter a strange printing problem when sending an image from Photoshop to the Epson PSC 700 printer. If I select "Photoshop manages colours", the printer dialogue box won't open and the file won't print. If I select Printer manages colours the file will print, but the colours are off.

I've already uninstalled and deleted all printer stuff and installed the driver again and made sure not ot select the airprint version. I've also installed Photoshop again and did a reset of the preferences. Nothing solved the problem. I wonder if anyone else has experienced this weird problem and found a solution.

I would be very grateful.

Thanks in advance!

I thought it important to let you know that I've solved my printing problem and I wanted to let you know what I did.

First, although my most recent exploratory discussion with an Apple senior advisor was good and was suppose to result in him calling me back with a report from engineering, he and I haven't yet connected.  Unfortunately I didn't time my availability correctly and when he called, I wasn't at home.  I called back and was told by another senior advisor that I spoke to that he would g

Good news,  after the update to Big Sur 11.6.5 the issue is finally resolved (hope it will not come back at the next update).

After the update to 11..6.5, I delete my Epson 3880 from the printer list and re-install the printer driver then add the printer in the printer list again. All the profile come back like before in Lightromm and photoshop.

@jeffhenny : what version driver do you have installed? Your print settings are much different than mine: The current one for Big Sur is 10.85

Upgraded to 11.6.6. today and all is fine. Epson profiles show up properly, both in ColorSync Utility (Output Profiles) and in Print Dialogs.

Ignore the preview in the Print dialog, it's soft proofing has been broken for years.

Jumping back in here....

Have deleted my driver and reinstalled....

Few questions as the print diaolge has checged and seems to be more complicated...

Things I thought were of note and wanted to check.

This is all with Photoshop managing colors....

Colormatching - Off

Color Matching - Colorsync

Custom Color Matching - None

Any red flags here of what i am doing wrong?

If you have Photoshop Managing color, then you should not select ColorSync. That amounts to a double-managed image. You don't want that. If you instead select Printer Manages color, then you have two options for color management: either ColorSync (making sure you've selected the appropriate ICC profile; Automatic doesn't necessarily grab the right one), OR Epson Color Controls, and apply Color Management there.

You only want ONE instance of management in your print chain.

Actually not only the opposite (you do want the ColorSync radio button on), you have no other option in Photoshop.

Some software products are using a private (undocumented) SPI called kPMApplicationColorMatching which you see in Photoshop and Lightroom and the Adobe Color Print Utility. When you set Application Manages Color, the area of the driver that controls Colorsync will alter the radio buttons such they are grayed out:

Jeff, I'll try to answer your question.  I don't know what software you are using, Lightroom, Photoshop Elements, or Photoshop CC.  What I'm going to go over is how I use Photoshop CC with my Epson P900 printer.

Before starting my process, I wanted to go over something.  When I look at your screenshots (thanks for including those) it looks like, in the Photoshop dialogue box, you've selected 'PRINTER MANAGES COLOR' then you are going to the Epson dialogue box and printing through 'COLOR SYNC'.  While this is possible, I found that Apple's Colorsync sometimes is in conflict with what the other printer colour controls are trying to do.

Looking at my screen shot numbered 1, you'll see I've selected the 'PHOTSHOP MANAGES COLOR' option.  When that is selected, I then set my Printer ICC profile in the box below.  That is critical.  It must be the ICC profile for the paper and not the media type.

I then click on the 'PRINTER CONTOLS' box and that takes me out of the Adobe Photoshop environment and puts me into the Epson controls as shown in the first Epson dialogue box.  The first thing to do is set the right paper size (ignore the one I chose as I'm printing using roll paper at the moment).  There is a whole list of paper sizes avaiable for selection or you can create your own custom size.  The screenshot numbered 2 shows the Epson printer dialogue box with 'COLOR MATCHING' selected.  IMPORTANT:  notice that both options are greyed out.  That is because I've selected in the Photoshop print diaglue box, previously, that Photoshop will manage the colours.  That is where the ICC profile was selected.

Next, I go down to the 'PRINTER SETTINGS' in the Epson printer dialogue box as seen in my screenshot numbered 3.  (again, ignore the Roll Paper selection I have at the moment). Under 'MEDIA TYPE' you set the media type that the printer paper manufacturer has provided.  This is important.

The 'PRINT QUALITY' is your choice.

When you then click on 'SAVE' you will be taken back to the Photoshop printer dialogue box (see the first screenshot numbered 1).  That is where you make the final command to print down in the lower RHS.  Up to that point you can cancel at anytime and return to Photoshop or Lightroom, whichever you're using.

I need to note that I don't have the screenshots for the equivilent set up with Lightroom or Photoshop Elements, but the same principles will apply.

This approach bypasses Apple's ColorSync application.

If this doesn't work the only thing left is to share screens and try to work it out that way.

By the way, I'm also not sure whether your working with Big Sur or Monterey; however, both will use the same process I described above.

Cheers,

Jack

Hmmm--sounds like you've hit the wall that I hit.  I may be able to help if I recognise something.  I can also show you my screen.  We can do this now within FaceTime, which you're probably aware of.

To get hold of me initially, please go to my website (www.jackblair.ca) and use the email provided there.

When you say you have removed and reinstalled Epson driver ... be very careful with the Epson web page where you get the driver. The "detected" computer and OS dialog pulldown menu DOES NOT WORK CORRECTLY and may think you are on a different computer and OS than you are. This caused me 2 weeks of struggle.  No matter what it says about detected, select the dialog and scroll down or up until you have the right OS and computer. Then go to the download options and get your driver.

I was getting driver 10.33, but needed 10.85 and that made a huge color difference. So be warned!

Oh, I forgot to say, but do not forgot to click GO after scrolling through dialog menu and getting to your computer and OS. Otherwise you will still be on the wrong one that was "detected" incorrectly.

Epson really ought to correct this mess, a definite web page bug.

Hello Everyone....

I am back! After trying everything myself I found a system of trial and error and think I have a solution!

A friend of mine has the same printer as me, the SC P800...

I went over to his studio, dropped him a file and he printed how we both have done for ages and on his system it still looked crap and the same as my printers results, was happy that took a software bug on my end being a problem.....

Tried another file and same result....

He doesnt usually use Epson papers so we tried printing one of the images on another brands paper with a custom profile he had made and boom, it looked great! Not perfect, but I am not after perfect just something that looks remotly like my screen...

I borrowed his calibrator and made a profile for the Epson Luster paper I use and the results are much better again not perfect but much better and viewable.

Although it was a bit of work I am at least able to use my printer...

My answer is I believe Epson profiles are broken and sh*t at the moment and that is my solution.

I am going to be calling them and complaining as I wasted much ink and paper for this solution...

Thank you for all your help! I am good for the moment.

macOS Big Sur problems - is this issue now fixed? Hope so - Users are reporting that the update to macOS 11.6.5 fixes the print issues.

History:

There is apparently a bug in macOS Big Sur 11.6.2 in connection with ICC profile use/printing,

Some users have reported success after updating to macOS Monterey, personally, I'd be more likely to go back a version rather than jumping into a new macOS  version so soon after release.

Sadly this bug appeared to still be present in macOS 11.6.3, according to users here who have made that upgrade.

Some users have reported positive results in macOS Big Sur - with some profiles being usable after opening them into the ColorSync utility and “fixing” any errors found.

I hope this helps
