Printing to Fuji kiosk

Community Beginner ,
Jul 03, 2023 Jul 03, 2023

Hi, I am having trouble printing to the Fuji printers in most stores (Harvey Norman, Officeworks, Camera House). The prints lack contrast and have a green/blue cast. I used the Fuji self-serve kiosk in Officeworks for the past few years and they printed great (very close to what I see on-screen in Photoshop), but they recently installed new kiosks and printers and now my prints are terrible. I tried other stores around town with similar results. I have a calibrated Eizo monitor. Any help would be appreciated. Cheers, Linda

The RGB colour profile is Adobe RGB (1988), which without special handling will be lacking in saturation if assumed as sRGB. You need to convert copies to output at consumer devices as sRGB.

Should I work in Adobe RGB but convert the profile  to sRGB when saving the finished file for printing?

@davescm "I would try converting to sRGB, embed the profile, and test to see what result you get."

yeah I agree, in my experience the Frontier wants sRGB and they don't generally read customer embedded profiles

I hope this helps

Are you working in RGB or CMYK? What RGB or CMYK profile do you work with?

RGB as far as I know.  In Color Settings the working space is sRGB IEC61966-2.1

Hi Stephen, I'm no Photoshop expert so you will need to tell me how to do that sorry.  When I went digital I used a lab in Melbourne who helped me set up Photoshop and download the ICC profile for their printing.  That worked great but I did have troubling printing at local store Fuji kiosks until I happened across the local Officeworks in store kiosks which matched what I was doing on screen perfectly, until they replaced them with new ones 😞 The photos I print are mainly 6 x 4 prints for my family albums.  Larger prints I send to bigger labs seem to print well. Thanks for any help you can give me.

Cheers,

Linda

I would hope that such kiosks employ basic color management, but sRGB would seem a safer choice indeed.

I use Adobe RGB because it has the larger colour space.  Should I work in Adobe RGB but convert the profile  to sRGB when saving the finished file for printing?  I was using the Fuji kiosk at Officeworks for the past years with Adobe RGB files with no problem.  A few of the websites I Googled about the problem said that the Fuji printers ignore embedded profiles anyway.  I can try it and see what difference it makes though.  Thanks 🙂

'..........I Googled about the problem said that the Fuji printers ignore embedded profiles anyway.....'

If the printer you are using is ignoring the embedded profile, it must then be assuming some profile in order to give a meaning to each colour value. For consumer printing that is most likely to be sRGB (although even that is an assumption). I would try converting to sRGB, embed the profile, and test to see what result you get.

Hi, I did a number of prints of the same image but different settings (convert to sRGB, untick "desaturate monitor colors by 20%) and also did one with the Fuji Frontier printer doing "Auto Correct" and "No Auto Correct".   There is a noticeable difference between the Adobe RGB and the sRGB prints with the sRGB prints being much better color and contrast.  The "Auto Correct" print had higher brightness and contrast (nearly a bit too contrasty) but still these prints are much better than I was getting outputting with Adobe RGB. I was getting good results before with the Adobe RGB files but the old printers at Officeworks must have been set up differently.  Anyway, I am much happier now that I can get reasonable prints quickly and cheaply.  Thank you all for your help 🙂

Cheers, Linda

@lindab24869306 Just to clear something up - you wrote: "untick "desaturate monitor colors by 20%"

That deasturate option should be very rarely used and never for judging final image appearance. It CAN show detail in super saturated areas - that’s what I use it for but I ALWAYS leave the dialog open - to remind me to turn it off. Otherwise all your prints will look over saturated compared to the screen

I hope this helps

You can check whether it's RGB by going to Image > Image Mode. Let us know what you find. It's very important.
