Problem with selection and nw layer

I am having a problem with Photoshop 2021 which is driving me crazy!
If I use the Quick Selection tool to the select the sky, it works perfectly, but when I hit Ctrl J to make a layer of this selection, the layer that is created is not the sky alone but rather a rectangle containing the sky.  Depending on where the sky intersects the boundary of the photograph, the layer shape may be two rectangles.
If I follow the same procedure in PS Elements, everything works correctly.

What is happening? I have tried for two days to fix it without success.

Thanks, I will try your suggestions.  As regards the license, it was bought through a UK vendor who is an approved Adobe agent.

Problem solved. It is a hardware problem.  Same software works perfectly when loaded onto my laptop.
Thanks for all the suggestions.

See if going to Edit>Preferences>Technology Previews, checking Deactivate Native Canvas and restarting photoshop makes any difference.

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfprtunately, it did not work either.

This is what happens in Photoshop 2021 (Windows 10 Pro)
And this is what happens, with the same procedure in PS Elements 2021

Puzzling, eh?

Hi, can you check if you are working with Ps 22.5.1?

Please post in an attached .txt file the contents of Photoshop's Help>System Info... menu, so that we get to know your OS, its version, the exact version of Photoshop you are running, the date of the GPU driver, etc.

Can you show a screen capture of the quick selection the edge areas should  have some feathering  when  you view the Ctrl+J new sky layer.. The Quick selection tool does not do a good  job on default image that  have trees in the images with Sky behind them.  The Quick selection tool should not normally select rectangle areas.

Photoshop menu Edit>Sky replacement  though does a good job IMO.

However, it misses the reflected sky in the water.....

Thank you for replying.  How do I post a screen capture to this forum?
