I am also getting this error, but it only happens when I am saving files to my Google Drive (via Google Drive file stream). Is this an issue for anyone else?

Hi all,

Apologies for the incorrect instructions previously. Have now edited the original instructions (step 3) to require the dismissal of the Program Error dialog prior to the error detail contents getting added to the system clipboard.

Step 3: Reproduce the Program Error, then click OK to dismiss the Program Error dialog (This then copies the detailed error text to your clipboard)

Give this a try and see if you're able to paste/provide the error details here in a new reply.

I am getting this error when I attempt to open a file (tried with .jpg, .png, ,psd) and then again when i try to close the program. In order to close the program I had to use task manager. I installed the diagnostic plugin, and I followed the steps to get it to reproduce the error, but the error appears to close the plugin and I don't get any data on my clipboard.

I have installed PS 22.1.1 and have the same problem that I have had with the previous two versions - I cannot save my files. I have two unsatisfacotory work-arounds: I need to flatten my files and I then need to re-name them. The message that I get when I try to save the file is:

Could not save [file name] because of a program error.

I have a 2017 iMac with - 

Processor 3.4 GHz quad-core intel i5

Memory 32 GB

Graphics - radeon pro 570 4GB

I used the Program Error Diagnostic Plugin and I all tried all of the suggestions listed in Adobe's "Program Errors when opening or saving files." I called for tech help but the issue was not resolved and I have not heard back from Adobe.

Thank you all for trying the plugin and sorry that you've had trouble with the data getting added to the clipboard. 

One suggestion from engineering would be to disable the background save function in Photoshop. 

You can do this in Photoshop's Preferences > File Handling > Background Save

Give that a try and let us know if the Program Errors diminish!

I am also following the instructions for the diagnostics plug-in, installed it successfully, and checked the box to copy to clipboard, but nothing is being copied to the clipboard after I recreate the "Could not complete your request because of a program error." error. Running latest v. 21.1.1

I am also following the instructions for the diagnostics plug-in, having pasted the relevant folder into plugins, yet no information is copied to the clipboard at any point. Running latest v. 21.1.1

I am not able to open files, or even close photoshop itself, with the error message:

could not complete your request because of a program error


I am only able to open files by going into preferences, disabling generator and graphics card usage, and must force-close PhotoShop through task manager. I will revert to the previous version (22.1) in the hopes that this helps.

I am hoping someone can help. My error message is when I use the sky replacement plugin. I orginally went through the troubleshooting tips but always got  "Could not complete your request because of a program error." when I tried using this feature. I've now downloaded the Program Error Diagnostic Plugin, unziped and placed  folder in (Mac) Applications/Photoshop/Plugins. I open the diagnostic tool, check the box, recreate error but noting copied to clipboard. I just want to use the Sky Replacement feature and the not get "Could not complete your request because of a program error."
