PS 23.4.1 doesn't quite completely, leaving "background task" still running, preventing re-launch

Hoping for some immediate help.

PS doesn't quit completely.  After using it and then quitting, it leaves behind a background task that's still running, named "Adobe Photoshop 22"  Please see attached screenshot .  This prevents me from relaunching PS (apparently).  If I use task manager to kill this instance of PS, then I can relauch Photoshop again.

If I leave this running, clicking on  the PS icon in my taskbar (or any other launch methods) all fail.  No alerts or warnings, just PS won't launch.

Best guess is that as long as the background task is present, PS thinks it's a working instance and aborts the launch process.

PS doesn't completely quit, leaves background task running which prevents relaunch.JPGexpand image

This is new to me after installing 23.4.1 (current).
Win10/64, 64gig ram, Running everything on reasonably fast SSDs.

Hi @JerryandLoisPhotography, I see you don't have any replies yet, sorry about that. Are you still having this problem? Here are a couple of ideas. First, fully sign out of your Adobe account and Quit Creative Cloud Desktop app. End all the Adobe task processes that are running with Task Manager. Then, run Windows' Disk Cleanup tool and remove all temporary files. Finally, shut down your computer entirely and then do a full reboot. Launch Creative Cloud desktop and open Photoshop. Work from there. Open a file, save a file, then quit Photoshop. Does it launch again correctly? If not, you could try a preferences reset, uninstalling and reinstalling Photoshop, or use the Creative Cloud Cleaning tool. Instructions are here: ;https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/kb/cc-cleaner-tool-installation-problems.html. If you've done all of that without luck, copy and paste your System Info here in a reply. Let us know how it goes!

Hi Jain,

Sorry that it took a while to respond, but I have updated info.
1. For reasons outside the context of this thread, I ended up paving the box, reinstalling Win10Pro, along with all the CC apps of course.  I ensured I was installing the absolute most recent versions of PS and LR (installing via CC of course).
2. The moment PS and LR were installed (so everything was virginal fresh), I fired up each app and quit, one at a time; i.e. there was never an instance of both running simultaneously.
3. Residual processes for PS and LR were still running.  These prevented PS and LR from launching.
4. The only solution was to use task mgr to manually quit each process.   Sometimes after quitting, there would be 2 processes with the same name, not just one.  To reiterate, they each had to be killed before I could relaunch.

This duplicate behavior is a very recently started behavior, perhaps with the last update, certainly wasn't present 4 or 5 months ago, but I'm not sure when it actually started.

Hoping you can get answers on this.  It's a pain!

Thanks,
Jerry

Hi all,

REALLY HOPING someone has answers for this.  It's an ongoing issue on my machine for both LR and PS.  They each leave behind a running process (seen in Task Mgr) when the apps quit.  This completely prevents the app from starting , again.

Please help!

Thanks.

Hi—sorry to hear this is still ongoing! If you can, please launch Photoshop, in the top menu under Help > System Info, copy and paste the text in a new reply here, and we'll take a look. If the forum blocks you from doing so, please send me the info via a private message here, and I'll post it for you.

Hi JEL
I didn't receive a notification that you had replied else I would have responded much much sooner.  This problem is maddening, and I often have to reboot my machine in order to relaunch PS.  Not a welcome work-around when I'm deep in the middle of edits and facing critical deadlines.

Hi @JerryandLoisPhotography, I'm sorry to hear you are still having problems, and also that you didn't get a notification of my reply. Meanwhile, here we are! Thank you for posting your system info. I believe you have already gone through a manual preferences reset, and you've also uninstalled/reinstalled Photoshop and/or used the Creative Cloud Cleaner tool to remove any traces of old programs.

Here are a few things I notice in your system:

  • Wintab Digitizer Services is running. That may be causing some type of conflict. I don't know enough about it myself.
  • Your NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER card driver is 3 months old. There was a new release last month (Sept 20, 2022, 517.40 - WHQL). Please access this through your NVIDIA account and make sure you install the latest Studio (not the Gaming) driver.
  • Your Intel UHD Graphics 360 driver is 16 months old and there are new releases available. Please check for a newer version through your system support assistant.
  • Seems as if your scratch volumes are external drives? H:\, 931.5G, 615.1G free; E:\, 117.2G, 49.9G free. I don't know enough about this configuration to advise something else. It may be fine as is.
  • Under Duplicate and Disabled plugins, this is listed, so you may want to investigate. PortraitPro 3.1.0 - from the file “C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop 2022\Plug-ins\PortraitProPSFilter64.8bf”

I'm also pinging Adobe employee/engineer @CShubert to ask him to please take a look to see what else might be recommended. I hope things get sorted out for you soon.

Hi JEL,

Thanks for the review on my system.  At the time that I initially started this thread, my production machine had just been freshly paved, and all drivers were current (ensured by the TS team's review at Dell FWIW).  The issue we're discussing was present and problematic from the moment that the Adobe products I use (PS, LR) were installed.  I will get the video drivers up to date ASAP.

The external drives are actually each internal SSDs.  My primary SSD has 3 separate partitions, one of which is E:\, and the secondary SSD has the H:\ partition.

I will take a look at the Portrait Pro plugin, but this too was not installed at the time I reported the issue.

Please note, FWIW, the problem also happens occasionally with LR, in which there's this weird leftover process, but LR seems to know how to get around it.  PS absolutely will not launch if there's the remnant PS process.

So, I greatly appreciate your time for this, but don't think we're even close to the cause of this yet.

Hoping you'll continue investigating!!!

Thank you!

Happy to help. I'm assuming you aren't having any trouble running Photoshop in terms of slowness or crashing, right? It's only when you File > Exit that the program closes, but still runs in the background, and you aren't able to relaunch until you fully quit from Task Manager.

That's correct.  Slightly more detail:

  • There are times that even when I use TM to delete the process that PS will not launch.  REBOOT needed <argh!>
  • There are times that after PS has closed, that there's no obvious process (for me to delete), but PS still will not launch.  REBOOT needed <argh!>

Quite maddening, especially when facing critical pub deadlines...

Thanks again...

Okay, understood. Thanks for that extra info. Do you run a regular (weekly or so) Windows Disk Cleanup to remove temp files and DirectX Shader Cache? Just trying to think of anything that might be causing this.

Hi @JerryandLoisPhotography sorry you are still having this issue.  As @J E L mentioned;

Your video driver is 3 months:
Driver date: 2022-07-21 000000.000000-000
Driver age: 3 months
Driver version: 31.0.15.1693

If there is an update, please install and see if this solves.  There have been NVidia issues in other areas that might be releated to your issue.

Thank you,

Thanks, Cory -

I will double check, but as mentioned above, this was issue right after paving and reinstalling the OS on the box (and ensuring all drivers were current at that point).

I won't be able to update drivers for another week or so, as I'm in production on a huge show I just covered this past Sunday honoring the wonderful and legendary drummer Alan White.  Alan was one of our very best friends, and musicians from YES, Queen, Heart, Journey, Dream Theater, TSO and many others who all flew in to perform the signature songs Alan had recorded on the originals (Imagine with J. Lennon, My Sweet Lord with G. Harrison, along with the YES catalog that he was drumming with since 1973 or so).

So until I can finish off everything from this, I won't be touching the drivers of course...

Thanks!

Bumping to try to get answers, please.
I just upgraded to PS 24, the same exact problem persists.
This is a major issue, especially with the holiday photo season now beginning.
Being forced to reboot my machine every time I relaunch PS really wastes a LOT of time.
Can someone in the PS support community please help???  This problem has been a non-stop issue for many months now (it was happening long before I launched this thread).
Thanks

Yes, PS 24 has this issue for me.  You can work around it by opening task manager and closing PS.  Then PS will again open.  I have had this issue with an earlier version of PS and the next version after it was OK and remained so until recently.

bwinkjet -

Thank you, for at least confirming I'm not the only one seeing this.

The issue with using TM, it doesn't always work, and it's really really a bad solution.

There are times when it the PS process doesn't show in TM, but I still can't launch PS.

If I have to use TM multiple times, when PS does happen to launch again, it's unstable.  Menus are screwed up (won't display text or icons) and overall behavior is extremely unstable.

Would really be nice to have some support from PS on this...

Extra bonus - this also happens (but not as often) with LR classic.

Hi @JerryandLoisPhotography This sounds very frustrating… again. I think you'll need to work with Adobe support directly. AFAIK, you've tried every solution offered, including using the Creative Cloud Cleaning tool, updating drivers, uninstalling and reinstalling Photoshop, and resetting your OS. We examined your system info and gave you a few suggestions earlier, otherwise we don't know what is causing the problem. While a few other users have reported the inability to fully quit without using Task Manager, your ongoing difficulty even launching and running Photoshop, requiring a full system reboot each time, seems to indicate something deeper is going on.

You will need to set aside time to go through all the troubleshooting steps again with support. Even if you have done them several times and nothing worked, there has to be a thorough process of elimination. You'll need to give tech support access to your particular system. I realize this isn't ideal, but your issue seems to go beyond what we can diagnose in the forum. Any crash reports submitted will be collected for examination, too. I recommend calling directly rather than going through chat.

To call Adobe, search this list for the support phone number in your country:

— Phone List: https://helpx.adobe.com/contact/phone.html

Please let us know if your issue is resolved!

Thank you, J E L.
The challenging part - my past experiences with the Adobe support team have all been vast and deep rabbit holes with no solutions, broken promises to call back, and a few folks who actually deleted files off my desktop and kept going even when I was screaming STOP STOP STOP! All this mixed with a lot of finger-pointing at DELL, even though the experience (like this) is specific to Adobe products.

I hear you. That's unfortunate, and I can only hope that if you call again, it will result in landing better technicians. By the way, do you have any third-party antivirus or firewall software running (other than Windows Defender), such as Trend Mirco, Norton, McAfee, or Malwarebytes? Do you connect to the internet via VPN? Are you continually syncing files via a third-party cloud app such as OneDrive or Dropbox? Is your system backup set to automatically backup? If so, how often? Every 10 minutes, Every hour (default), or Daily? If you are running any of these scenarios, you might try disabling all of them, resetting your Photoshop preferences manually, doing a full system reboot (not a restart), and trying again. Worth a try.

Hi,

I have mitigated (not going to claim fixed just yet) this problem.  I uninstalled PS 24, keeping my settings.  Then I opened Task Manager and closed all PS and Bridge references.  I then did a cold reboot of the computer.  After restart I reinstalled PS 24.  Don't know if it makes any difference, but I open PS first and then open Bridge using alt, control o. Select and process in bridge and open a copy in PS.  Since doing that I, knock wood, have not had anymore problem.  Easy to try this fix.  Would be intrested if this would help you.

My "fix" did not long last.  I tried some of the fixes mentioned by NM, colourmanagement net, Oct 30, 2022, and continued to have an unstable platform and a failure to close almost every use.  I reinstalled the earlier version and all is well.  Stable, fast, less flashing of screens and no need for Task Manager to close the program.  Hope the next update is better.

bwinkjet - thank you for the update.
J E L - for me and I'm sure many many others - it's the holiday season now, and there's just absolutely no time to go through all the diagnostic efforts - again.  I started this post back in early July, and sadly, it sat in limbo for the bulk of the time since.

For the various test paths you mentioned, I'll cut to the chase.  I completely paved my system (i.e. hard format on the primary hard disk), installed the OS, installed PS and the problem repro'd 100% of the time.  PS was a virgin installation; i.e. no changes to prefs, all under a completely clean box.  I'm not about to try all that again, knowing the extreme likelihood that doing so will get me different results this time around.  And again - especially not with the holiday season now in play.

I'm not the only one reporting this, so I'm not totally crazy.  In a wouldn't it be nice world, I'd love to see Adobe TS get involved, but I don't have the luxury of time any more, I just have to live with an unstable system; something I am certainly not excited about...

Thank you...

Perhaps try resetting Photoshop preferences?

(read this entire post before acting please)

Resetting restores Photoshop's internal preferences, which are saved when Photoshop closes.

If they become corrupt then various issues can occur.

Here’s some info on how to do that:

https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/preferences.html

Manually removing preferences files is the most complete method for restoring Photoshop to its default state:

https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/preferences.html#Manually

The user Library folder is hidden by default on macOS.

To access files in the hidden user Library folder, see here for how to access hidden user library files.

Unexpected behavior may indicate damaged preferences. Restoring preferences to their default settings is a good idea when trying to troubleshoot unexpected behaviors in Photoshop. check out the video

You may want to backup your settings and custom presets, brushes & actions before restoring Photoshop's preferences.

I hope this helps
