Using M1 Mac, I can't get it to work on text / shapes / smart objects or anything - is there some setting that needs to be set in the preferences ? Apply it to a smart object and it requires it to be rasterised, which is not how it is described. 

Not sure why it doesn't work as in Affinity Photo and it either inserts it into the layer (probably not something for Photoshop but would be nice to see) but if there is no layer, the assistant creates a new layer and the brush stroke continues. 

Apply the brush stroke and if the layer is not there or there is a layer that can't accept a brush stroke, it should automatically create a new layer instead of just blocking us with a 'cannot do it' symbol
