Hello there.

My .psd (digital paint) file displays as a black single layer background. My PC crashed but I saved my work before hand. My Win 10 PC crashes often times but I can get my work back but this time a black background layer is showing up.

I have tried the following remedies but they didn't work:

1. Used different PCs to open up the .psd.

2. Updated my GPU drivers.

3. Changed my GPUs (GTX 980 to RTX 3080 Ti).

4. Reinstalled Photoshop.

5. Used older versions: 18, 20, 21, 22.

6. Disabled GPU in the Raw Camera menu and Performance menu both.

7. Used several .psd repair apps.

8. Tried converting the .psd to image file.

9. I don't have a restore point for my Windows 10 so can't restore it to earlier time.

 10. Used other Adobe apps to open the .psd.

The file is 586 MB and doesn't show any message regarding corruption. I can provide the .psd if you need. Please help. 😔🙏🏾

Hi. If you get the same issue on different computers (Used different PCs to open up the .PSD) then the file is damaged. Please share the file to check it.

Dear Marliton,

I am currently experiencing an issue with a PSD file in my project. The file, which comprises 163 MB data, is only displaying a single black layer. Could you please assist me in resolving this issue?

Thank you for your help.

Hi @Muhammad300042950jiw if the file is opening as a single black layer - the damage is already done and saved over the previous. Do you have a backup that contains the layers? If not there isn't anything to be done to recover from this file.

Hi Kevin,

Thank you for replying. But it's still showing 163mb of data.

Where is the file stored? Was this on an external source saved directly from Photoshop?

Don't save over files. Always save as a new version and use incremental filenames i.e. filename001.psd, filename002.psd  .....etc

That way you can ensure the most recent files open before you delete the previous version(s). Regular incremental saving also protects against crashes and your own errors (we all make them).
