PSD transform tool with shift key - grabbing middle handle is not transforming in aspect ratio

I use Photoshop 23.3.2 right now, but the problem is occuring since end of last year 2021.

I use the old transforming option - so if you transform without any key pressed the object isn't transformed in aspect ratio, so to say it gets distorted. If you press SHIFT the object gets transformed in ratio.

 

So far so good. If I hold SHIFT and grab a corner handle of the object frame, everything works at it is supposed to. BUT, if I hold SHIFT and grab one of the MIDDLE handles of the object frame, the object isn't transformed in aspect ratio as it is supposed to!
I even realized that the "chain" symbol - which shows the aspect ratio transformation - is TURNING OFF when I press SHIFT and grab a middle handle. Not so, if I grab a corner handle, than the chain symbol remains active.

I also made a video, see below, so it is easier to understand...

Since a few months this error appears for me and hasn't been solved with any update.
My colleague doesn't have this problem, for her everything works as it should.
I even uninstalled an reinstalled PSD, deleting all preference data - nothing helped.

Please, anyone has or had the same issue and has any idea?!
This is driving me crazy as it makes my workflow complicated as hell...

Hi @MagdalenaMan I think you may be confusing Legacy and non-legacy behavior. If I enable Legacy Transform, it behaves the same in all versions going back to at least CS6 (I don't have anything installed older than that but I'm confident it goes back further). Holding down shift and dragging the side in is disproportional.

 

I think what you want to do is disable "Legacy Transform" and then simply uncheck the proportional chain icon the first time you transform.

 


This setting is "sticky" and will be remembered between invocations of transform and launches of Photoshop, and the transform tool will behave the way you want it to where shift key will transform proportionally from the corner and the side handles with the shift key down.

    This was it for me!

     

    Cannot believe that such a small thing made such a difference - but I already thought, it has something to do with the chain icon and that it is sticky somehow.

      Dear Cory,

      as already shown in my video, yes I use the setting with the transform legacy - as I want it to act like in the old PSD versions, but with that setting the error appears.

      If I use the NEW transform settings it works as it should. But I do not want to use the new settings, as I am used to press the SHIFT key for proportional scaling...

       

      Anyway, maybe another important info for you:
      The error appears over 3 different divices - as it appeared first when I used a windows back last year, on my new MacBook Pro at work which I use now AND on my private iMac too! Everywhere the same issue!

      As if the error is linked to my Adobe profile, not only to a specific device...

      Thank you for the additional info @MagdalenaMan.

      It may help if we could see your Photoshop System Info. Launch Photoshop, and select Help >System Info...and copy/paste the text in a reply. 

      The fact that your colleagues don't have this issue makes me think it is a plugin/settings issue that you have that they don't?

      Let's start with your sys info and go from there.

      A short addition as my memory just came back:
      Our company switched from Windows to Macs in late October 2021.

      BUT this error started to occur for me BEFORE on my Windows PC already around ... July/August? I guess...

       

      I than thought maybe the switch will change it but it stayed with me even changing platforms...

      Not sure if this info helps you.

      Yes this error occurs since late 2021 for me - sadly I do not know which version it was since this first occured. I think it was around october somewhere. I hoped that the error will be fixed with one of the next versions but sadly not.

       

      I can understand that you were not able to reproduce the error as for all of my colleagues it works as it should.

       

      I even already deleted the preference folder as you told me - the error still occurs sadly. 😞

      Hi @MagdalenaMan, thank you for your video, very helpful and easy to see what you are seeing.

       

      We tried it here with 23.3.2 and it works as it should, so not sure why not for you. You mentioned that for you, this issue has been around since 2021? 

       

      Let's make sure we're in a default state and there are no stale settings somewhere: 

      Restore your preferences using this manual method:  

      https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/preferences.html#Manually  

      Does it work correctly? 

      If that doesn't solve it, you can quit Photoshop and put the Settings folder back. 

      If it does solve the problem, I would like to get the folder of settings to try and figure out what is bad with them.
