The quick selection tool does not work properly in 22.5.0 20210809.r.384 ce617de x64. I just get a trail of dots around what I want selected, but nothing within the dots is actually selected which is what I want. Windows 10. No updates available and I've rebooted. Nothing helps.
The second thing to try is to reset the Quick Selection tool. Right-click the tool in the options bar (not Tools panel) and Reset Tool. (That will also reset the "enhance edge" option, btw.)
The third thing is to reset preferences after backing up customization:
Prefs > General > Reset Preferences on Quit.
