"Could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document" When opening a .PSD

I am trying to continue work on something I was working on yesterday and when attempting to open the .PSD file, I am greeted by the error: "Could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document"

I have had a look for any others whove experienced the same bug with little luck.

Anything helps, Thanks.

That is either a corrupt file, or a file of another file type saved with an incorrect file extension (an example would be a TIFF with a PSD file extension)

Did you save to a local drive within your computer, an external drive or a network drive? If it was a network drive, try copying it to a local drive first, then opening it.

I found that Bridge could read mistyped filenamed files as long as the original file format was one readable by Bridge. So for example, I have a PDF, I rename it as a .psd, then Bridge can still show me the thumbnail. That gives a first clue of what has happened. If Bridge cannot show the thumbnail, then it's more likely a corrupted file.
Now to discover which file format it has to be renamed to, in the case of the former, then the thumbnail might show a clue (a what is clearly a vector document etc...)...

Does it work correctly? 

If that doesn't solve it, you can quit Photoshop and put the Settings folder back. 

It may help if we could see your Photoshop System Info. Launch Photoshop, and select Help >System Info...and copy/paste the text in a reply.

I see that this is your first post to the Adobe Forums. You have replied to a two-year-old thread that has been solved. Please tell us how you happened to get a trial version of CS6, which is no longer available.

macOS has an app called Preview that can test to see if the issue is simply the wrong file extension. The way it works is you remove the extension and open it it Preview. When you save, Preview adds the correct extension. If you can share your file using Creative Cloud, Dropbox, etc., I'd be happy to take a look for you.

Can you open the file with a text editor, such as Windows notepad?

Right click on the file and choose Open With > Choose another app > NotePad > Just Once.  It may take a short while to open.

If it is a PSD, in notepad it should start 8BPS 

If it is a TIFF, in notepad it should start II or MM

A jpeg will start ÿØÿá

A PNG will start ‰PNG

If yours is different to 8BPS then change the file extension from PSD to the appropriate extension

Warning - View the file but don't save the file using notepad !

This is definitely a CC bug in my case. File was not corrupt or renamed, been using this psd for years. Here is the scenario - I was logged into CC on two other devices, and tried to open the PSD on a third, that I was logged out of CC on. The "Could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document" persists even after logging into CC on that device. It seems that it is Photoshop either rejecting or corrupting the file due to this stupid 2 device limit rule. So tired of this garbage software.

When you save file with .(dot) extension, it usually gives problem when you try to open it again. Do not worry, your files and saves text types, design everything is still there. It somestimes not possible to fix at the same pc. So, to solve it, copy that file and flash drive and open on different pc.

In my example, I saved file as 10.22.2024 (example). When you save file with dot, system try to recognize it as file extension after the last dot. So it crashed and I couldnt open. I tried to rename it .psd and it still didnt recognize. Because somehow, system hide 2024 and it showed me only .psd

After I copied it to the flash drive and open it in different pc this is what I saw file name as  mycardesign.10.22.psd.2024

As you can understand that I wasnt able to see 2024 on the previous pc and it let me only add .psd extension.

So on the second pc, I deleted .2024 and was able to open file. Then rename it without using dot like 10-22-2024.psd

Or dont even use full date. After I rename and save and copy flash disk, I was able to open at previous laptop.

I forget to tell you solution on the same pc but sometime it doesnt work. Still try this.

Open file location, go to file explorer are where you see 3 dots. Click that, click Options, go to View and unselect "Hide extension for know files types" click ok. You will see another extension on your file after the .psd So delete that and rename it with .psd 

It should work that way too.

You should always have file extensions visible. You apparently had them hidden, and that's when it's easy to get double extensions like in your case. Keep that box unchecked.

The problem elsewhere in this thread is corrupt files, regardless of extension.
