Question

Recolor clothing item, leaving stains unchanged

Looking for any pro tips on recoloring an image (a 3D object skin), without affecting bloodstains and rips on the item.

My current method is a combination of magic wand selection and selection by color with some manual tweaking thrown in. Just wondering if there are any new miraculous Photoshop ways for doing this.

Attached sample shows a blue/grey coverall, it will end up a pilot coverall (in the same condition with the same rips and bloodstains)

Thanks!

Same As Trevor I would suggest Hue Saturation on a smart object, with maybe a blend mode to explore various effects…

Anyone interested in changing colours etc. but keeping the shading, might like to check out the Neural Filter Wait List, and express an interest in Shadow Regenerator.  It is not clear exactly how it functions, but I am hoping it is similar the Extract Shading Sneak Peek from MAX about 12 years ago.  That function never made it to Photoshop, so fingers crossed for this one.  Squeeky wheels get oiled, so the more people that express an interest, the more likely they are to make it happen.

Your example is basically just a texture, so you don't need to select anything.  It's also got lots of mid tones (greys) so it shows the colour well.  This would not work on full white, or full black.
