Something for the weekend - Part 13 - Great Eggspectations!

Hi

This weekend I thought we would try an Easter challenge. It is traditional here to decorate eggs at Easter, so the challenge this week is to use the egg below and either decorate it or use it as part of an image. You could go for a traditional approach, or turn it into a "Faberge" style egg, or make a scene and characters...........the world is your oyster (or egg)!

Anything goes as long as it meets the forum rules on decency, copyright etc.

Anyone is welcome to have a go - whether you are a complete beginner or a Photoshop expert.

There are no prizes - just the chance to practice, show off, or bring a bit of humour and fun.

When posting back your edited images please use jpeg and downsize to 1200px on the long side.

To download the image below without the forum scaling artifacts, right click and then use Save Image As / Save Picture As (or similar depending on your browser).

Enjoy and have fun.

I think even Terri will get this one, but maybe not our friends in America.

I'd forgotten about that thread Jane, and there's some very nice work there.  The Filter Forge Droste Effect is way too limited to be properly useful.  It looks like Pixel Bender did a decent job of it back in the day, and I bet most of us still have licenses for versions that would run Pixel bender.  It's not readily available to download though.

OK, I have found a working link to a CS5 compatible .MXP (Extension Manager) download for Pixel Bender.  I 'think' I have a license to CS5.  Yep, I sure have.   It's nearly tomorrow here, so this will keep til the morning.

Whoops.  The link

Where to download the CS5 pixel bender plug-in?

Hi Trevor

The clock is a 3D model in Photoshop

I started with a simple rectangle shape and made an extrusion:

Then adjusted the extrusion  using the depth, twist and taper controls:

Then I added the clockface numbers to the extrusion material, adjusting the UV properties to tile and position the numbers along the extruded spiral

Finally added other objects such as the pointers and collar - which were simple extrusions

Finally render and then mask with the 2D egg, adding a gradient background, shadows and the egg reflection

Dave, If you ever come visiting we'll be able to get inside now, as our new front door is a double opener, and we'll need all that room to get a head so full of smarts through it.

Sorry, lousy picture, but it is dark and I just used my phone. I was thinking of asking Dag what colour we should paint the step.

The "Open Door" filter comes as part of the special CSI plug in Jane, along with the "See Around Corners" and "Read number plate from 3 blurred pixels" filters.

Hahaha, Dave!

Anyway, really nice job with the interior! And Trevor—your new door is truly lovely.

Is the doorbell one of those that takes video? The Nest doorbell just came out last week and I am thinking of getting one.

Hah!  Chris is going to laugh at that.  Is it from the Raffles Hotel, home of the Singapore Sling?

Jane, the doorbell is just a doorbell.  We did have to change it, and I did look at the Nest video bells, but I thought it easier to look through the window.   We don't get a lot of visitors.

I can see that is your work Dave by the Symmetry Bird.  Guys, if you have not seen Dave's symmetry drawings, go take a look.

David Richardson - More Paint Symmetry

How about the clockwork interior?  The animation is very smooth. How many frames.

Thanks Trevor.

It has 50 frames. I quickly modelled the parts it in Blender then rendered the frames to PNG and assembled them in Photoshop to make the GIF.

I was going to use C4D Lite in After Effects but although the C4D Lite version can quickly model the cog wheels, it does not have the gear rigging of the full c4D versions. That would mean that the master gear could not drive the movement of the other gears. Blender's  rotation and transform constraints allow that rigging - hence I used Blender.

Dave, you have amazing artwork on your website. Have you ever done one of those Tech Wednesdays for Tricia?

Trevor, let us know if Chris wants to redesign the whole inside of the house now, too, now that she sees its potential.

Thank you Jane. No, I've never done a Tech Wednesday, although I've attended many and learnt loads !. I'd have to have a think about what I could do that would hold interest for an hour -  I'm not a teacher, just a guy that enjoys making pictures .

Tech Wednesdays work out as 5am here, so not something I'd want to watch live.  I listened to a recording once, and the audio was so over driven it was painful.  There are a ton of recorded TWs, but I don't think you can access them without an ACP badge and I don't like to put a link in this public forum.  Looking though the list, there are several that you just know are going to fall somewhere between interesting and pure gold, so something to remember for the quiet times.   It looks like you need Connect to view them.

Dave I am sure you could do a great TW, and not all the previous presenters are going compete with Deke McClelland or Russell Brown.  How about the way you use Symmetry?  You have taken that further than any other results I've seen, and ISTR someone from Adobe (Pete Green?) asking about using your work to promote it.  Could you fill an hour with that?

Of course, there would be an issue with translation and a need for subtitles, as non Brits are not going to understand Gordie.  Blimey, even I can't understand some of this!

Here you go.  A complete breakdown of British accents.  I'm going to be closest to London. Terri East Anglia, Dave Geordie (I am only guessing but he is from oop north.  Ged is going to be either Belfast or Dublin.

Not many people know this, but Dag did the voices for the Chief in The Muppets
