Hi
There were some excellent ideas and images in our last, 'Misty Nights', challenge. Thanks to all who took part.
This week we have something different. There are countless coins around the world. In the UK alone, according to the Royal Mint, it is estimated that there are around 29 billion coins in circulation. So I thought we should have our own SFTW coin.
Here is the blank coin. What will you put on it? Also feel free to show it in use.
A quick tip for anyone new to Photoshop, Layer Styles - Bevel and Emboss can be your friend here.
The “rules”:
* Anything goes, as long as it meets the forum rules on decency, copyright etc
* Anyone, and everyone, is welcome to have a go, whether you are a complete beginner or a Photoshop expert. This is not just for our forum "regulars".
* There are no prizes apart from the chance to practice, show off, or bring a bit of humour and fun. Don't be shy, join in and have a go!
* The starter image is made available for you to use in this forum challenge only.
To download the image below at full size, hover over the image and click on the circle with the arrows at the top right. Then, when the image opens in its own window, right click and choose “Save Image As/Save Target As” (or similar depending on your browser).

Have fun

That's very cool Lee. I'm guessing you used Illustrator to make that nice spiral?

Thank you but I use Photoshop. I thought about illustrator first but I remembered this new feature in photoshop.

So what feature did you use?

You've got me wondering what I am missing now? The only way I know to make complex spirals with Photoshop is the offset concentric rings trick. Or you could use an exisiting shape.
I used Illustrator to make the path for the animated spiral on the previous page.

Very cool image, with the spiral.

OK, I think I have got it. You used the Curvature Pen Tool? It's a new(ish) feature, so that fits. I haven't got the central section worked out yet, as I was not sure where to start. I set up a nice course grid (my method for that is to use Image size. Disable Resample and change the resolution. The higher the dpi, the coarser the grid. I did have to go into Preferences to reduce the subdivisions to two.) Another thing that supports this is that your text starts from the centre, so the path was created from the centre working out. Is this how you did it? 🙂
BTW I did search for Spiral with Discover but got nothing new or useful. It looks like we have learned a new trick though, and it's always a good day when that happens.

Hey, do you think Native Americans used Illustrator or Photoshop to do this rock art sprial near Moab? They obviously use Free Transform on the stick man on the right.
I just happened upon this in this video (@7:36) and had to share. The channel is about off-road recoveries around Moab. It gets a bit scary at times, like at 21:45 in this video coming out of Kane Creek. Warning, a rude word is said by an alarmed onlooker.
OK back to SFTW.

Trevor... Lol, yes you got the spiral down. Also the type is done with the path selection tool. It will allow you to place type any where on the path. It will flip to the inner or outer line too. Try it you'll like it.

Trevor and Lee, great tips, thank you very much. I always learn something here!

Lee, did yoiu fine tune the spiral after using the Curvature Pen tool, or is your spiral unedited? My example above has no editing, and I was able to dramatically improve it by editing the points. I have a feeeling that there will be an optimum grid pattern to follow to get a near perfect spiral, so if you have that off pat I'd love to know I even seached for creating a spiral with the curvature pen tool and got zero hits, so AFAICT your idea came right out of your head. I only worked it out because you inspired us, and we hate missing out on tips and tricks as cool as the Jumpenjax Spiral. 🙂

Trevor, I use a spiral clip art to get the desired effect I was looking for and yes, I did tweak it a little. Then I deleted the spiraled clip art. This is why I love photoshop so many ways to get to the results of your own vision.

Good use of the statue from SFTW85 Dean. She is still looking out to sea but only seeing the inside of someone's pocket 🙂

I did a gold coin design for my Carver & Creators show last January and I thought this would be a perfect opportunity to make a silver version. Thanks for the fun prompt.
