Something for the Weekend - Part 179 - Life's a beach!

We had a lot of fun with our end of year challenge in the snow. So, for our first challenge in 2023, I thought we might exchange the cold snow for warmer sand and head for the beach. I snapped this particular beach, at Sangobeg on the North coast of Scotland, a few years ago. It is a lovely place, even if the temperature is a bit lower than the Caribbean. The question is - what can you make with this empty scene?

The “rules”:

* Anything goes, as long as it meets the forum rules on decency, copyright etc

* Anyone, and everyone, is welcome to have a go, whether you are a complete beginner or a Photoshop expert. This is not just for our forum "regulars".

* There are no prizes apart from the chance to practice, show off, or bring a bit of humour and fun. Don't be shy, join in and have a go!

* The starter image is made available for you to use in this forum challenge only.

To download the image below, hover over the image and click on the circle with the arrows at the top right. Then, when the image opens in its own window, right click and choose “Save Image As/Save Target As” (or similar depending on your browser).

Sorry I got to this one a bit late...the tide's coming in and someone's metal detector turned up a box of baubles. Screen Shot 2023-01-09 at 6.41.21 PM.png

Hi @carrr11259 welcome to SFTW. I looks like you may need a little help with masking to make your composite. If you post your starting images we may be able to show you how to mask the component images and make them sit.

Select subject* could be enough for this, but would not solve the cat's problem. I like the idea, however.

*only newer Photoshop versions. A CS6 version would not yet include that, if I remember well...

To make it easier, if you use the Yandex search engine, it has some useful options.

https://yandex.com/images/

For a start, if you select Size = Large then that parameter remains set throughout.  Google goes back to Any every time you change the search words.  But what makes selections a breeze is the White Background option.  The only problem with this is that you are relying on the skills of the person who removed the background.  Another advantage with Yandex is that you can see the size of the image from the thumbnails.

image.png

An even easier option is to add Transparent PNG to your search words.  Note: you have to save such filees to a local drive and Place Embedded to your composite because copying and pasting doesn't work.  Note also that a lot of the hits you get will still be JPG images, so you need to right click and choose Save As to see what file format is.  In the screen shot below, the top lef (Border Collie) does have a transparent background but the tan dog next to it turned out to be a JPG.

Yes, of course. It is also from your picture, see "Sources".

However, if you compare it closely, you will see that it is the same - but different.

Don't panic Bob.  Matt's Off Road Recovery will come to the rescue when those side-by-sides get stuck or break down.  I'm taking a punt here because that looks like very much Sand Hollow State Park in Utah.

Trevor, only that I have seen one like it here in another weekend, posted by you; as far as I remember that other one was more stripped with no door and was shown gracefully climbing some large rocks somewhere down there close to you.

Having taken a shortcut from the East Greenland Current (to the WNW) into the Norwegian one?

First spotted (to the WNW) in 62 when the mammy had just rescued the bairn chased by Titanic or some other vessel, then in 71 (When the boat comes in) following the four friends in the boat at Findhorn (59).

These are years of change, it seems.

Oh wow Jane.  What a clever idea.  That's proper lateral thinking for you, and so nicely done.  I'm going to guess that is a photograph of an actual sand-man, but that it is only a few inches high, unless they used a water based glue in the sand (like wallpaper paste.   That's a nice realistic shadow as well.

Thank you for the kind words, Trevor and Dave!

Dave, with all the pools of water, I'm wondering what the beach is like at high tide?

Yesterday was the first aniversary of the massive volanic eruption near Tonga   I had not appreciated how large the eruption was.  It was the largest volcanic eruption since Krakatoa in 1883 and the largest eruption ever recorded.   The resulting tsunami was not as big as the one that hit Japan in 2011, but it was substantial and wiped out buildings well inland from the shore.  Their economy has been wrecked and they are long way from being recovered a year later.

Do you know the term tidal range?

The highest in the world is in the Bay of Fundy in Canada - up to 21 metres.
