Something for the Weekend - Part 240 - Prickly Issue

Community Expert ,
May 09, 2025 May 09, 2025

Hi,
Thanks to everyone who put forward an image for our last 'Misty Mountains' challenge.

This week we stay outdoors and start with this prickly thistle. In the background are the walls of Dunstanburgh Castle on the North East Coast of England. What can you make from this week's image?

The “rules”:

  • Use the starter image as at least part of your own image entry.
  • Anything goes, as long as it meets the forum rules on decency, copyright, etc.
  • Anyone, and everyone, is welcome to have a go, whether you are a complete beginner or a Photoshop expert. This is not just for our forum “regulars”.
  • There are no prizes apart from the chance to practice, show off your skills, or bring a bit of humor and fun. Don't be shy, join in and have a go!
  • The starter image is made available for you to use in this forum challenge only.

To download the starter image, hover over the image and click on the circle with the arrows at the top right. Then, when the image opens in its own window, right click and choose “Save Image As/Save Target As” (or similar depending on your browser).

When posting back your image — please use the blue reply button in this first post and use the 'Insert Photos' icon at the top of the reply box. If posting a comment on someone else’s entry, then please use the grey reply button next to their image post.

Have fun!

Dave

The Saltire is only a claim to a wee bit of Land of the Thistle, Dave, but I felt I had to be quick, before Trevor decided to nuke everything here (before his tea), or decided to lay claim to the whole land by Saltire and kilt and thistle like he did on Lindisfarne (after his tea). @Trevor.Dennis

By far the loudest gig I ever attended was Lindisfarne and Gentle Giant at the Palace Theater in Westcliff-on-Sea.  My ears were ringing for two hours after it finished, and I was a bit deaf for a couple of days.  Dave knows the band members as they went to the same school as him, and two of them lived in his road.  They used to play Hopscotch in the ginnel behind their houses, and eat Hovis butties with real booter.

The band were probably best known for Lady Eleanor.

In the 70's we saw Linisfarne every Christmas at Newcastle city hall, Trevor. Memories 🙂

Lovely, smooth, animation Trevor. You've set the bar for this week.

Not Firefly.  I search for animated GIF with transparent background.  It doesn't matter what size they are. I use the Crop tool to make the canvas huge.  Select all frames in the Timeline and drag in a new background.  Crop, export and you are done.

I like YANDEX for finding the GIFs.  You can filter by format (GIF)

Thw White Background option useful as well, if there are not too many frames.  You have to be careful editing exisiting GIFs, but in this case you can select each layer and Remove Background without it getting its knickers in a twist.

The downside is that YANDEX is quite literally 'The Work of the Devil' (Russia) so some people might need to turn your Pragmatism dial up to eleven.

They'll know about it once those thistles start raining down!  We had a trebuchet as a challenge, way back in SFTW34.

@Jacob Bugge, I thought Trevor would be giving us something from the Dunstanburgh Golf Course.

. . .  or maybe he has just given us a scene from Caddyshack?

That thistle really does have a bipedal look to it.   Or it at least has arms and hands, if not legs.  It's the ultimate snipper's ghillie suit.  Or could be if thistles grew to be human size.

I see what you mean.  But maybe a kilt would be more appropriate for golf.

Brilliant!  When I posted this week's challenge I wondered if anyone would be able to make anything with it. I needn't have worried!

Is anyone else having a problem upvoting? I can't seem to do so for anyone's images here.
