Template Linked Duplicate Layer Non Destructive

Hi everybody, I really didn't know how to title this

I want to create a template where I can drop an image in the background and have it automatically duplicated in other layers and updated as I apply changes to the background layer, how can I achieve this in Photoshop?

Or should I use another application for something like this? Maybe InDesign would be better?

Thanks in advance!

Please elaborate.

Linked (or even Embedded) Smart Objects may prove useful to you but I am not sure I understand what exactly you are trying to achieve.

I need to create overlay banners with text and to do this I usually duplicate the layer, use a clipping mask and then use the filters or adjustments I need, but I do all of this manually, I was wandering if I can make a template where I can drop the image and then just type the text I need for that image instead of duplicating the layer for every banner.

I hope that made sense, thank you for your response

You can use cloned Smart Object layers:

  • Create Smart Object layer then press Ctrl/Cmd + J to duplicate it, actually to create cloned Smart Object layer. Content of original SO layer and duplicated will be linked (content, not transforms, filters, adjustments... which you can create/apply after creating cloned SO layer). Changing content on any of cloned SO layer will automatically update all other cloned instances.
  • Create clipping mask and apply adjustments you want.
  • Right click on any of cloned SO layers and choose: Replace Contents then navigate to the image which you want to use. Newly placed image will be updated for all cloned SO layers.

If this does not work for you then please explain further your problem.
