TIFF files saving very slow compare to PSD

Since about two months, after an update, when I save my TIFF files, when ready retouching it, it became ridiculously slow. Saving stands at 99% for a minute or so, it takes minutes to save even a small 150-300mb, 8 bit files too! Now I tried to go with PSD format - I jump from LR to PS to retouch my portraits -, and it is as quick, as it was before, a few seconds.

Why it is so slow to save in TIFF? Compression also on with PSD! I didn't change any settings in a long time, and it became slow, don't know why.

I work on Mac, up-to-date PS, 21.2.1.

Was wondering what was going on causing the long save times. After reading this post and comments, I did a test with the file I have open. Here are my test results:

Comp.   Save Time   File Size
=============================
None        3.03s     298,570
LZW         3.83s     203,982
ZIP        44.47s     190,177

 It's not a computer resource issue, I'm running a 5950X CPU and 32GB of RAM, none of which are taxed during the process. Now I know to avoid this waste of time. Thanks all!

I suffer from the same issue. I don't recall it starting until after updated to 21.2.1 last week. It just took 2 min 45 seconds to save a file I'd consider mid-sized to my internal SSD. The progress bar slowly creeping along. However, I have experienced progress remaining on 99% for quite some time more than once on past saves. The document size shown in the lower-left is 146.3M/592.8M. In comparision, many of the files I save are well over 1 GB and used to save in less than 15 seconds. It does not occur everytime, but enough to frustrate me when it does.

I am working with some very large files and saving a TIFF the same size in Photoshop can take 1-3 minutes while in Illustrator will take 20 minutes or crash before it finishes. I have 64G of RAM and Illustrator floors it while saving, and in Photoshop, I can continue working on other files while it saves... What's the deal? Is there a better way to save TIFFs from Illustrator?

I don't know, I don't use Illustrator. But the issue is still exist. I shifted to PSDs, its saving quicker, but no zipping. Maybe that is the problem now. But this long time to save a tiff file is ridicolous, and still no answer or reaction from Adobe! :-((

@Jirons I would recommend to post your Illustrator issue in the Illustrator forum, it has a different authors and codebase.

I would not recommend compressing the file. I would recommend save the file as psd, Then flatten the file and save as tiff. That should make the file save faster.

Can you provide a sample file, where you're saving to and your timings?

  • Different Image Compression settings can greatly increase the saving time for files. Zip is the slowest.
  • If you have lots of layers and turn on Zip compression for Layer Compression, things can really feel slow.
  • Where you save can also affects speed (external drive, etc).

For example, this file gives the following timings saving to my internal hard drive (the desktop) on macOS 10.15.x:

Getting back to Jeffery Tranberry,

My example is here: https://shared-assets.adobe.com/link/dfda8485-85a9-42ba-51a3-dd5a3fe86ac2

You can find the approximate time spent to save the file using several options for the tiff file.

What I find strange is that this same file, when edit on previous version of FS, didn't took that long time to save.

Some of my other files are taking 5 to 7 min.

Time enough for me to grab a coffee downstairs, come back, and wait it to finish.

For me, it seems to be something about the new version 23.0.2.

Let me know how can we help Adobe to solve this issue.

Cheers

@Thalesm Thanks. Is it possible to share the original file so I can see if there's anything specific about the file causing the problem and can compare apples to apples? Feel free to DM a link if you prefer.

If you download my Tiff file from above, what timings are you seeing with it?

@J453  I'm confused here since the files in the adobe cloud are not tiff files, but a PSD files.

Since many years I don't use .PSD files because I don't see any good reason to do it. Have you any?

About your file:
No compression => 00:06:14

Zip                      => 01:30:46

Lzw                    => 00:19:12

psd                     => 00:32:18

No problem to send you the my original file if you tell me how to send privately to you and not public in the forum.

File size +/- 882MB. In my machine it took 09:54:16. That's a lot no?

Click on my name on this page and then click message.

The timings with my file seem a little curous that ZIP is taking a minute and half on your machine. Zip compression is mostly dependendent on CPU speed.

The other thing that might be helpful is your system info. Launch Photoshop, and select Help >System Info...and copy/paste the text in a reply.

@Thalesm

Alongside your system info, could you also clarify if you also used Zip compression for the layers as mentioned earlier?

Do you have timings on older versions of Ps? Which one?

(asking this as the OP stated issues around the time of Ps 21.2.1.)
