Transform automatically turns on whenever I select a layer?

Community Beginner ,

I have this very irritating problem that I can't find any answers for.

Whenever I select any layer to paint, it goes to free transform automatically and has a box around it. I sometimes have to hit "enter" to disable it before painting the layer.

I'm using version 21.1.1 on a macOS Catalina 10.15.5.

Thanks in advance!

Perhaps you have checked Show Transform Controls in the Options bar when Move tool is active? Can you post screenshot of Ps window with Layers panel also visible?

Thank you for this answer. I had the same problem and it was driving me crazy. I don't remember checking it either but perhaps accidentally clicked a shortcut or something. Thank you again!
