Unable to change save path of Smart Object

Hi,

My version Photoshop 2015 cc.

My intention was to replace the graphics from a smart object layer so:

1. I double clicked the link in that layer and a new tab opened.

I noticed that the file of this new tab is stored on Temp folder in windows, as *.psb.

2. I used File -> Place Import to import a new image on that new file and

3. save it.

Immediately I saw the result on my initial psd file!

I reverted everything and repeat the above steps:

3. save as to another folder.

My initial psd file remained unchanged as it seems it reads only the psb file from temp folder!

I also tried to delete psb file, the result: when I double click in the smart object layer link the new tab with the image does not open unless I close and reopen the container psd file.

Any ideas on how to save that smart object as a psb file side-by-side with my psd file in a way that the last one can read from it and not from the temp folder?

Do you use another way to replace the graphics from a smart object with a file in your disk?

You can't save the smart image (layer) somewhere else and still expect it to be the same smart image (layer).

BTW: why are you still using 2015. You are on a Windows PC, and there is no reason, not to upgrade.

yes I should upgrade but everything seems on a subscription plan nowadays https://www.adobe.com/gr_en/creativecloud/photography/compare-plans.html - no stand-alone software anymore!

That's right. This is the way it's supposed to behave. The PSB is saved to temp as you work, then saved embedded in the master smart object file.

If you Save As to a different location, you're splitting it out from the master smart object, and creating a new separate (un-smart) file.

In later versions you can also use linked files as smart objects, but I'm not sure that was invented yet in 2015.

...so when I save the original psd with a new smart object graphic bigger in size I'll also see an increase in file size? If I delete the psb from temp no harm I suppose.

Why deleting? Photoshop delets automatically, when you return (close) that PSB.

A smart object is taking up the space, the smart object would take as a separate file, as it is basically a Photoshop file in a Photoshop file.

Im not sure in 2015 but in more recent versions you can right-click your Smart Object Layer and choose Replace Contents. That will allow you to replace the link with another. Saving the PSB in a new location is just creating a copy unlinked to the original file.

I tried Replace Contents, it works but it loses all formatings of the original smart object - that's the idea behind smart objects to replace it with another graphic and see immediately all the effects applied.

What effects have you had on the original smart object?
Usually, transformations, adjustments and filters are kept intact even when you replace the contents. Actual size might differ.
Can you post a screenshot with a crop with your layer and all the effects expanded? like this screenshot (note that the transformations like warp or perspective won't show in the smart filters)
