I would like to use the Gradient tool to customize the direction and length of a gradient inside a custom shape.
I don't want to use the Gradient Fill dialog box. I want the freedom to drag using the Gradient tool.
I really haven't touched the Gradients and Custom Shapes in PSD in a long time. Has it ever been possible to do this?
Have the custom shapes changed?

Sandee, I am not sure this is what you have in mind but the clock in the image below will allow you to control the direction, and the gradient controls length of color.

Thanks Norman but those are the same controls as in the Gradient Filter dialog box. I want the freedom to drag with the Gradient tool. I could have sworn I could do it years ago.

Hi Sandee
You could add a layer above the shape then clip that layer to the shape and use the gradient tool on the empty layer
If you need to bend the gradient you could go on to warp the upper layer

Thanks Dave.
I was aware of the mask and gradient layer.
I was looking for something as simple as dragging with the Gradient tool.
I don't get why Photoshop doesn't let users apply gradients so easily.
