Versions 26.8.1 and 26.8 Brightness/Contrast legacy parameters

New Here ,
Jul 13, 2025 Jul 13, 2025

Hello,

Since the updates 26.8.1 and 26.8 the legacy parameters in the Brightness/Contrast menu give non consistent results compared to 26.7 and previous versions

Here is the script i use :

-grey level on the texture

-Edit the Brightness/Contrast parameters, legacy activated :

-- +40 for contrast

-- +15 for brighness

The original texture is attached as well as the psd containing the comparison between the 2 versions

King regards

Hi! I see that the texture file does not have a color profile assigned. If different color profiles were (accidentally) assigned to documents when opening the file in versions 26.8.1 and 26.7, the ratio of values in the RGB channels could have changed, which directly affects the conversion algorithm to gray (and, accordingly, how the document will look after applying the same brightness/contrast settings)

If it is not too much trouble, please post screenshots of your color settings (edit -> color settings) in the new and old versions of Photoshop.

Hello, you will find the color settings picture in both  26.8.1 and 26.7 versions

I checked they are the same to me

Kind regards

I also found that the luminosity in legacy mode is consistent between 26.8.1 and 26.7, however the constrast is not

Hi @louisp69864070

Thanks for bringing this up. To help us investigate further, could you please share a few more details?

  • Which operating system are you using (e.g., Windows 11, macOS Ventura)?

  • Are you seeing this behavior with specific image types?

  • Does the issue occur consistently across all files, or only certain ones?

  • If possible, could you share a short screen recording or screenshots comparing the behavior in 26.7 vs 26.9?

This will help us better understand the issue and share it with the team more accurately. Appreciate your help!

Regards,

Srishti

Hello,

Sorry for the late reply

I am using windows 11,

I only tried with .DDS type of image right now, for explanation, I use personal script/procedure in photoshop to create textures used in games. And some of them implies the use of legacy mode for brightness/contrast.

I decided to use a texture in another format (JPEG) but the result still differs between each versions

The different result are visible after aplying the brightness/contrast option with legacy mode

From the concrete texture I apply :

Greyscale

Contrast +40 luminosity +15 using legacy mode

I tried without greyscale but the result is still the same, the 26.9 results seems way darker

I included the original texture and the comparison between the 2 versions with and without greyscale

Hi @lpt_78,

Hope you're doing well! I’m not totally sure how your script handles things, but I’ve noticed that the Brightness/Contrast Legacy setting can behave differently depending on how it’s applied. Using it through an Adjustment Layer tends to give different results than applying it directly to the image.

That might be what’s causing the variation you’re seeing. How are you applying the effect in each version?

Thanks,
Alek

@Aleke Thank you for your support

As far as i know I do not use any adjustment layer, I've send copy of my whole screen in case I missed something

I open file file and directly go in greymode and edit the brighness/contrast

As well as the history

I always do the script in the same way, without adjusments layer to my knowledge (the captures are in my natural language)
