What is that shadow behind the text with the sharp defined edge and how to remove it?

The original looks like it may have been a vector image, so an app such as Adobe Illustrator would be the best place to edit vector content.

Thanks for a reply Stephen 😉 I just installed Photoshop 2024 and am getting used to it. I am currently working on creating a business card. While I've been creating it I have played with different styles and effects on the text. I found that I liked how the drop shadow looked on that lettering so I applied it. Well, for some reason now when I choose the same effect or Any effect, it leaves that background artifact or glow ect. It no longer just applies an effect to the letter, it has some kind of effect on the background too. I've played around ALL day long to try and rectify the issue, to no avail. Not sure what could have changed? Can't find any settings that have changed, and I certainly haven't messed with any. Everything was fine. I watched dozens of videos on youtube today and Nobody had my problem, all of the effects they applied only affected the Text itself, nothing else. Thx again for the reply, enjoy your Easter.

Without the layered file, or at least a screenshot of the layers panel, it's hard to comment with any certainty.

OK, Thx. I will take a shot of that for you. I'm the epitome of a beginner, so bare with me. And thx again for you time and effort! Here are a cpl more examples of what I'm seeing, one is using Stroke, and another using Inner Shadow...they each have that residual background with those edges.

Here are some snaps I took of the open project, I think this is what you want/need to see? These images are from Before The Problem. Just so you see an example of both.

And here are a cpl more from the latest project I'm working on and the issue is present here. Using the Stroke feature, it applies that additional color to the background, with those defined edges.

Hi!

I'd like to jump in and make an observation. It looks like the same Outer Glow Style is applied to a number of layers. Is that what you are looking for? It's very possible that you had multiple layers selected when you applied the style? or maybe copied the style to other layers? Is that what you want? If the glow is applied to a layer and you don't want it there, you can 1) turn off the visiblility by clicking the eye icon (I used to say poke the eye!) or if you know you definitely don't want it, then drag that Layer style layer (not the layer itself) to the trash and delete it.

If I am not understanding what you are trying to accomplish, please give me another description of what you are looking to create?

And can I make another suggestion? Keep in mind that contrast makes for a better (more readable) design. When you have light/multi-colored type against a light background, it will not be readable from a distance. If you don't want the hard drop shadow, then maybe make your background dark so that it contrasts with the light colored lettering.

Let us know how we can help,

Michelle

Great advice Michelle.

Something I only recently picked up on, is that if you apply a Layer Style to multiple layers, or even after using a Layer Style in a previous project, is to hit the Restore Default button when starting a new style.  That let's you know there will ne no settings doing weird things.

@Nightrocker  sorry guy, but that smudge is just plain nasty, and IMO would be so in any context, and definitely in a small area like a business card.  The gradient on the letters is too busy, but the drop shadow is OK.

You might like to head over to the ProDesignTools site,, and download the free E-books they have available.

The Adobe CC Design Basics is full of excellent advice on layout, colours, fonts and making your graphic art look professional and nice.

I picked it up from the Texturelabs channel.  Brady there, is even better than the likes of Jesus Rameriz at coming out of left field, using tools in ways they were not designed for, and getting some cool effects by doing so.

Hello Michelle and thank you for your time and effort 😉 All I am/was trying to do was apply some effects to some text on my card. But when I would try there was this artifact in the background that was also taking on the effect and creating defined edges {the ones I pionted out}. That's what I was seeing but didn't know why until a few moments ago. The paint drip font I was using has a glow effect behind the font that I couldn't see until I put it over a black background, then it was as plain as day! I'm sorry that I didn't test a little more before asking/posting, but I tried to problem solve it all day long, lol. Being such a rookie it took longer than it should have. All a learning process for me, Thanks for understanding and helping.

It is much more readable against the black! And, if that effect/style is associated with the font, is there anywhere you can turn it off?

SOLVED

Thank you again Mr.Marsh! It indeed was an issue with the image. I couldn't see that it had an illumination effect associated with it until I placed it over a black background. Then I saw the hard edges and knew what was happening. I'll just choose different font or create my own. Thx to Everyone for their concern and effort to help me!
