Why can't I edit smart objects directly? I end up getting the shape alone

Hello everyone!

I'm trying to use smart objects for mockups, etc but can't seem to edit them directly. This is the workflow.

I make a shape, then transform it into the perspective I want using "distort" and "warp", once I'm done I right-click on the shape to make it a smart object. I double-click on the smart object to go to the .psb document. But I get the shape and not the smart object. When I add an element to it, it does not work with the distortions I made earlier. It's hard to explain but I attached screenshots.

I'm using Photoshop 2023 on the Macbook M1.

Thanks!

You should make your object a smart object first, then distort. That way when you open the smart object to edit you can apply the other elements and it will distort with the original.
