Question

Working with bitmap without changing to grayscale

Hello! I'm new to photoshop and I'm working in a manga cleaning project in Bitmap and I can't modify anything. I know that one way is to switch to grayscale and work there but they explicitly told me that I can't change to grayscale

"NEVER pass a BITMAP file to GRAYSCALE. To work outside of the file, select and copy the area to be worked on, and paste it into a New File in Grayscale. Do the onomatopoeia, or whatever, on a new layer. Place the corresponding STROKE, copy and paste on the original file in Bitmap, Invert the selection and carefully patch the rest of the image."

I don't understand what I have to do because I can't paste anything into a bitmap file or at least I don't know how to do it

Here is a screenshot of the image that I need to work on just in case it helps

It shouldn't be a problem if you do it carefully. Make sure you don't use any tools or techniques that soften the pixels.

Here is a section of my original scan (I only did it at 600 ppi for speed.)

Original for size comparison--appx. 8.5 x11:

Converted to grayscale

Converting back to Bitmap settings:

And to avoid missing values other than 0 and 255 in the layered grayscale image one could add a Threshold or Posterize (set to 2) Adjustment Layer atop all the other Layers.

And halftone screens could be created with Hard Mix Pattern Layers.

"NEVER pass a BITMAP file to GRAYSCALE.

That seems pretty close to nonsense.

Changing a bitmap to grayscale so as to be able to use Layers etc. is not a problem as long as the conversion back to bitmap is performed with the correct settings.

Narurally it is prudent to work with (and keep) two separate files if bitmap output is essential – the layered grayscale (or even RGB) file and the correctly converted bitmap file.

Will the parts you edit/insert need to get a halftone screen or are they only »lines« and black areas?

What is the problem about pasting something in a bitmap file?

Are you sure there is image data in the clipboard?

Could you please post screenshots with the pertinent Panels (Toolbar, Layers, Channels, Options Bar, …) visible?

What are you trying to modify?  When its set to Bitmap, there's a limit to what you can actually edit

In this case I need to redraw the onomatopoeia from japanese into the latin alphabet

Example:

From this

To this

In other cases, I need to erase the japanese words and redraw it to look like nothing was there
