Brightness control over generated content

I'm placing a sailboat onto a water scene. The boat is too bright for the amount of sunlight in the scene. I would like to be able to apply controls such as Curves, Exposure, etc. to the sailboat, even if that requires a new rendering.

You can do that easily by clipping the adjustment layer(s) to the underlying pixel layer. Then the adjustment only affects that layer.

Alt-click between the layers. Note the clip symbol:

I must be missing something, because my adjustment layer affects all pixels within the generated layer, including the prior background content that was borrowed to create the new amalgam.adjustment_layer.jpg
