Freenhand Lasso Tool in Photoshop

Hello Everyone,

As an illustrator I am having hard times while using freehand lasso tool in photoshop.. I don't think it can be modified in system preferences. the problem is when you are selecting a specific area with the freehand lasso tool you have to keep your pencil tip onto the pad surface and make continuous line or it will connect the first and the last touch points and make a shape that is not what you had in mind. The same tool in Adobe Fresco (which is designed for pads not for desktop computers) is way more easier to use even on desktop computer.. when you release your pencil the line that you drew remains as it is and you can continue selecting after rearranging your hand and it will connect the first point you make to the point you released your pencil at.

If this settings can be changed in preferences please tell me how..

or if it can't be changed can this be fixed in the next versions? I don't see any reason why should photoshop have the traditional freehand lasso tool which makes our lives complicated :))

thanks

Until adobe changes the lasso tool in photoshop you can press the Spacebar to pause the lasso tool and left click the mouse at the point you stopped and then release the Spacebar to contiue drawing.

What pad or tablet are you using? Sounds like it is a driver issue with your graphics tablet.

Ive been working on several wacom cintiq tablets for years now and the problem Im talking about didn't disturb me until I saw the updated and much easier version of the tool in Adobe Fresco.. I just wonder why didn't they just take and copypasted the very same feature in Adobe Photoshop

The Polygonal Lasso tool is the one that is designed to click and release, click and release, repeat. Have you tried that instead?

  • If you make a mistake with the Polygonal Lasso tool, press Backspace (Win) or Delete (Mac) one or more times
  • To end the selection, click once on the start point (look for the circle on the cursor) or double-click when you are not on the start point

You can switch between the two tools with the Alt key (Win) or Option key (Mac). Practice this first.

If you prefer the Lasso tool and accidentally close the selection too early, try this:

  • Hold Shift and start dragging from inside the selection
  • Once you get started, release Shift but not the mouse and continue selecting

@jane-e
many thanks for the comment! Very nice of you explaining everything in detail! Yes, I've been using the polygonal lasso tool a lot and in some cases it is much more useful... however, when you need to make a selection of a cloud shape for example you need the freehand lasso or the pen tool to create smooth shapes… if the shape is somewhat simple you can get away with the freehand lasso tool, but when its complicated, and you need to reposition your hand, the pen tool is the best alternative: you create the path and then make a selection. So there is a solution, but it takes some time. If Photoshop had the same lasso tool, Adobe Fresco has, life would be much easier! Thanks again for your reply!

Your comment made me oven Fresco to see what you were talking about. I love it and have just upvoted on the Idea.

No, you can't change the tool in Photoshop, but the developers will see you post and others can Upvote it.

Adding to a selection in Fresco was easy and intuitive, but I couldn't figure out how to subtract from a selection.
