P: Ability to arrange & customize save-as file formats so popular formats are at the top

Photoshop supports about 20 formats, but I only use 4 or 5 of them. It's bugged me since 5.5 to have to fish for jpeg somewhere in the middle of the list. Can the file formats get arranged by most commonly used? And maybe allow us to remove stuff like targa and large file format that nobody uses.

Alright, I'll amend the comment to say that this topic is over 5 years old, the only reply from Adobe was a year ago and failed to say whether any consideration would be given to the request

Hey Chris-- I did "read the comments again"-- I didn't see an official reply from Adobe. Is this something you can change in your products-- it seems like an easy coding change (some people have already hacked it) and would improve your products. I really get the feeling that since 1) we have no alternative product choices and 2) you have forced us into a subscription model that Adobe has little incentive to improve. That's the same mistake Microsoft made back in the day.

I have responded, so you can't say we haven't.

But it's a feature request with only a few people supporting it.
We have thousands of requests, many of which have much more support behind them.
And no, this is not a simple coding change at all.

Chris,
I am surprised by the comment" only a few people supporting it"
Everyone I know is of the same opinion, and are glad someone(Philip, e.g.) has brought this up. If you have a way for us to sign a petition,if that's what you need, I'd be happy to circulate it.

I said I "didn't see and official comment" not that you "didn't respond". And I still don't, and I don't have time to scroll through this thread again. Thanks for the (defensive) reply.

I work with hundreds of other designers and teach design to hundreds of aspiring professionals, and most I have talked to thought this was a great idea. Most younger students have no idea what a Targa or JPEG2000 file is.

The comments your eceive (and their quantities) are not reflective of the community as a whole-- there is certainly an interest for this change to the program. You are missing this point: this is a clear improvement over the current application-- I would think you and your dev team would be more than happy to improve your product and continue to make it better.

Your attitude is similar to the response I have received in all my other posts with open-minded suggestions on how to improve Adobe products: smug and defensive.

Look at the topic - not that many posts, and 10 people voting on it (one of which is me). That's compared to some of the suggestions that have hundreds of people voting for them.
This topic is the petition.

You are reading something into the responses that is not there.

Yes, there is interest in change - which is why the popular requests have hundreds of people voting for them. And there are hundreds of requests with more votes than this one.

Man, Chris' job must suck. Having to find new end increasingly complicated ways to convince people Adobe is actually doing a great job and nobody really wants better, easier to use products with new features, which are stupid and hard to do anyway.

Anyone from Adobe ever looked at Corel Draw? Does exactly what we need - as you use a file format, it goes to the top of the list and remains there. Most commonly used ones end up as a block at the top, lesser/never used ones are below, separated by a space. It's been doing that for years (decades? Can't remember).

As far as this being 'the petition', where in all the Adobe stuff flooding the net does it say that requests/petitions for product IMPROVEMENTS are available at... It doesn't. This is headed "Community-powered support for Photoshop Family" which inclines users to be believe that this is where you can get help, not request changes.

The Adobe website link for Photoshop requests leads to this site.
The fact that this is the site for Photoshop (and related product) feature requests has been communicated rather widely, even if it isn't featured in every Adobe advertisement.

Howdy... I started the original topic a while ago. Glad it's still active.
Chris, am I to take it you're a PS dev? If so, sorry you get so much flak.

I just wanna make this one small point, hopefully it has some impact.

Some PS/LR issues are frustrating, but only for a limited subset of photoshop users.
For example I see a brush organization topic with 132 votes.
But some users don't even touch brushes, much less need to organize them.

This minor issue with file formats, however, is felt by 100% of photoshop's users. We all save files, whether we're digitally painting or editing photos or tweaking video frames.

Fishing for filetypes is only a second wasted, but multiply 100% of the users, by 100% of their saved files, and cumulatively it's millions of wasted hours.

So please, consider bumping this one up the chain, or coding it yourself. It's one of those things that will feel like a breath of fresh air once it's implemented. People will say "I never knew how much I needed this, until I finally had it."

Thanks for your time, and the fantastic product.

Hey Chris-- sorry if I am harshing on you-- it's nothing personal. And I see the tone of this topic has become more civil-- thanks for considering the suggestion.

My main point is about customer service: if someone takes the time to suggest an improvement, especially one which is obvious, I think Adobe should say "thanks-- we appreciate your feedback" and put on the agenda at the next brainstorming meeting. It's all these tweaks to the software that keep you developers employed and challenged at your jobs, and can maintain Adobe's hegemony in the creative software industry.

I have suggested quite a few improvements to the software over the years and the general response is: not interested and defensive. It's so nice to have the "ear" of someone at Adobe. I just wish I could be heard more readily.

Yes, I am one of the lead developers on Photoshop.

We consider all the requests we receive, and only reject them if they are completely impossible or cause more harm than good.
But we do prioritize them mostly by how many people have requested/supported the feature.

Think about it: we have millions of users, several thousand requests, and dozens of new requests every day. If we brought all those requests to a meeting, the meeting would never end. We have to prioritize, and votes/support/number of requests is a primary means for prioritizing requests. (because we'd all much rather be implementing features and fixing bugs than stuck in meetings)

We are constantly implementing customer requests (big and small) and fixing bugs. We don't have infinite resources or infinite time to do all this work, so we have to prioritize. We can't get every request implemented in a release, but we look at the requests and re-prioritize them while planning each new release.

So, yeah, we hear you. Just because your request isn't completed immediately does not mean we are not listening. It just means that we have limits, too.

Well anyway there is a workaround to at least remove SOME formats in Photoshop CS6 Mac.

You just have to right-click on the photoshop icon, go into "show package contents" and then :
contenst / required / plugins / file formats and remove the ones you can like jpeg2000, pcx and pixar.

Just to (respectfully) inject some perspective from another product developer: if you have millions of users, and you're slicing your priorities according to things that have hundreds of votes rather than dozens... maybe the approach to prioritization is flawed?  Because your granularity is .0001% vs. .00002%.

In that light, maybe a suggestion which clearly would touch 100% of your users deserves a different weighting?

My company has maybe 25,000 users, and we listen to anyone who takes the time to write; but the #1 method we use for choosing which features and enhancements to prioritize is... our own judgment as product development specialists.  We're in a unique position to understand the ways of doing the most good for the most people, which is different than seeking to soothe the small groups of disproportionately vocal users (aka the grumps).

It is understood - scientifically proven, actually - that people are very bad at predicting what they want or what will make them happy.  They tend to overfocus on the 1 or 2 things that are under their skin, which skews their perspective away from the countless other smaller --- but cumulatively *more impactful* --- sources of friction and inefficiency that escapes their notice.

I'm not talking about bugfixes, I'm talking about the kinds of functional and organizational enhancements that reduce the number of muscles, brain cells, and synaptic transmissions required to get from point A to point B.  In our experience EVERYONE loves those, they are rare gems in the UIX world and we pounce on them whenever they make their rarefied presence known.

I submit that this request is exactly that kind of enhancement.  Thanks for listening 🙂

Will they read it? Probably. Will they do aything about it? Probably not - obviously the great cash-cow herd hasn't voted enough even though (a) it makes sense and (b) we've been asking for thiss for years now. we'll just get another non-answer about how there are so many other things being requested on a daily basis and they can't do everything. sure, there's some great improvements in the software (I've been on it since 3.0.4), but a comparatively simple thing like this that affects, as noted above, 100% of users, doesn't get the time of day.
