I have PS Elements 15 running on a laptop with windows 10. I have a catalog of 15k pictures I've accumulated over the yrs . I have my photos and backup catalog on an external hard drive. Lately when I perform a full backup, my computer seems to lock up after I get the message the backup was successful (back up takes a few hours). I can't even get it to respond to ctrl-alt-del. Eventually it either frees up or I have to power it off.
Any idea why ?
Thanks,
-Bill
I think that your backup is ok, but the only way to know would be to try a restore.
If the backup.tly is missing, the restore can't work. The catalog.buc is simply a renamed version of your catalog.pse15db database in your catalog.
For the computer freeze after the completion of the process, I don't know, but I have seen reports of the same error message about a Windows update pending. Maybe someone else can point to discussions about that message?
Edit:
A Google search showed many posts about this

Bill,
Can you check if there is a 'backup.tly' file written in the backup folder? It should be the last item written in that folder.
For me, a full backup for about 70 000 files (including raws) takes less than 3 hours on an average hardware config.

Thank you for the reply Michel. I checked and "Backup.tly" is the second to last file. It is followed by "catalog.buc".
Also, I say several hours but it could be around the same time as yours. I just usually have to leave the computer. Sometimes I'll start it at night before bed and find it completed in the morning. The problem seems to manifest itself after the completion. I'll wake the screen to see the message saying completed successfully and after I hit ok, that's when it seems to freeze (spinning circle or frozen cursor) it can take many minutes before it responds to a command. All the while the fan is running as if the computer is working on something.
I did find that in this instance, after it finally returned to functioning, which required shut down/restart a couple of times, that there was a windows update pending(I do check regularly). No idea whether this would have any impact on things
Another thought I had, and I'm just grasping at straws here, is that I'm wondering if once the task is complete, meaning that box saying completed successfully appears, if the computer sits in that state for a long time until I return to it, that's messing it up somehow. I'm no expert but that's just a thought.
Thanks again for your reply,
-Bill

What is your Windows version? Is it the Windows 10 (1803) build?
Could you copy and paste the first 15 lines of the dialog you get from the Editors Help menu >> System Information?

It is 10 with 1803 build.
Not sure what the editor's help menu is. I will also try to look at those links to see if it sheds any light on things.
Thank you again!

If it is the 1803 build, you may have a false interpretation of you free memory. That would be in accordance with the link I gave above.
Read the tech doc about the dreaded 1803 build and edit your registry.

I will definitely look into that. Whether I understand it will be another matter, lol! But, learning is part of the process!
Thanks again!
