Question

How to Export/Save a batch of images without Photoshop automatically resizing the images?

Hello,

I'm struggling to find a way to Export or Save a batch of images without Photoshop downsizing the images.  I'd like them to remain at 300dpi.  When I create an Action and then use Automate to process several thousand images, if I choose Export: Save for Web (Legacy) it sizes down my images to 72dpi, the same for just the Export option.  Save As does not size down the image but it saves all the images as copies and as they are saved with unique part numbers I can't simply rename them in a batch, I would have to rename them one by one.  Is there any other option to process a volume of images without having them be resized?

Technically Save for Web (Legacy) does not change the ppi of an image, what really happens is that in the interest of file size, the ppi metadata is removed, so that the file has no ppi value. The reason you see 72 ppi when you open them is that when Photoshop and some other applications see no ppi value in an image, they assume 72.

There are two parts to the answer here:

  • Do the pixel dimensions stay the same before and after export? For example, if images start out 3000 x 2000 pixels, do they stay 3000 x 2000 pixels when exported? If so, the images were not resized,  because if you apply 300 ppi the unchanged pixel diemsions will end up at the same number of inches.
  • Is it necessary to use Save for Web (Legacy)? Because if you are saving in JPEG format, you could adjust the action to choose File > Save As and choose JPEG format there instead. The reason that would help you is that the Save As command does preserve the ppi value.
