Question

limiting the effects of blending modes to certain layers

I have a PS file with several layers on it. In the middle of the stacking order I have a layer with a blending mode that I want to only effect the layer directly below it. I was figuring if I put both layers in a group, the blend mode's effect would be limited to only the layers in the same group (same as adjustment layers). Unfortunately, it doesn't work the same as adjustment layers. The blend mode is impacting every layer throughout the rest of the composition. Is there any way to get the effect I need?

Thanks,

- DK

You'll need to apply a Layer Mask on the BlendIf Layer that you want to contain to just the single Underlying Layer. This way it will affect only the Layer below it. Here's how to do it.
1. Create a Layer Mask from the underlying layer.
2. Move this Layer Mask to the BlendIf Layer that is above it.
3. Open the settings on the BlendIf Layer and Check the "Layer Mask Hides Effects. See my example below. I hope this helps!

You can clip an adjustment layer to the underlying layer, so that it only affects that underlying layer. No need to group.

Hover the cursor on the line separating the two layers. Press alt, and when the clip icon appears, click.

Hi

Which blending mode are you using? Yes, it should only affect the layer. Can you show a screenshot?
