Unable to merge shape components?

I was working with vector shapes and Photoshop CC started to lag (I believe because there were too many points). I've had this issue before and been able to speed things up again by using the "merge shape components tool." But I guess this time it was too much to handle because I just get a buffering wheel and eventually have to shut the program down using task manager. The file is huge now and way too slow to efficiently work with. Any suggestions?

SELECT YOUR SHAPES AND GO TO MENU LAYER - COMBINE SHAPES - UNITE SHAPES.
ACTIVATE PATH SELECTION TOOL AND READY!...............sorry my poor english 😞

Can you use the path selection tool to draw a rectangular selection around fewer components and use the "merge shape components tool" on those. In other words merge them a group at a time.

I had tried this before, but it's a good suggestion! I gave it another go and it seems to work, but only in very, very small segments. I may just have to bite the bullet for this particular project and make the adjustments slowly like this. In the future, however, is there anything to prevent this from happening? It seems odd that it would slow down so much.

Hi

It is hard to comment without knowing your system spec or the details of the file, as I've not had that slow down issue here.
